hoofhearted4
you can have both though. my favorite game of all time is MGS4. simply amazing graphics and an even more amazing story. and the gameplay is fun as well. but as some of you have broken it down (i think, i havent read everyones post) there is gameplay v graphics v story...for me, graphics, while nice, dont matter. its more of a gameplay v story thing.....borderlands for example. no story, but is one of the best games of the last couple of years imo. on the other hand, FO3 had tons and tons of backstory, but the gameplay was nothing super OMG, but fun. (and the graphics were ok, but not OMG either) and i loved that game. so in graphics v gameplay, gameplay wins. and in gameplay v story, it depends. there is a difference between shitty gameplay and nothing new gameplay. shitty gameplay ruins a game everytime, reguardless of graphics and story. nothing new gameplay is fine, if the game can immerse you....im kinda tired right now. im not sure if i got my point of as clear as i could have, but i hope yall get my point :P
HadToRegister
My Hypothesis is: Game Content is directly inverse to Game Graphics. The better the graphics in a game get, the less content, and shorter the game ends up being. Mainly to fit all of those super-duper graphics onto the current consoles. So how to make a short game play longer? Add achievements. Hide random stuff throughout the game and give an achievement for collecting all of them.Achievements are a cheap and easy way to make gamers think the the game is actually long and worth playing. I played Bard's Tale II back in 1982 on my C64, it came on one 5/14 floppy disc, it took me 7 months to finish because I got stuck on several riddles/puzzles in thegame that you had to solve in order to advance.Being that there wasn't any Hint Lines to Call, or the Internet as we know to log onto and go to the nearest hint/chest site, I was stuck. Mainly to fit all of those super-duper graphics onto the current consoles. again all i have to say is MGS4. takes me roughly 20-25 hours to beat the game (hard for me to tell cause ive never not left the game running when i wasnt playing). though if i skip all the cutscenes id say around 12-15 hours (ive never skipped all the cut scenes so still hard to tell) but ya, amazing graphics, story, length, gameplay. its a 10/10 game. then you have the Uncharted series. ive never played them, but their graphics are top notch and they are one of the most highly rated games on consoles. also games like Resistance and Killzone. while i cant speak on Killzone much as i havent played them (but reviews speak for themselves) Resistance is an amazing series. good graphics, an amazing interesting story. fun as hell to play. now both are FPSs so its a little different. Resistance probably has an 8-10 hour campaign i would say. and a lot of its lasting appeal is in the multiplayer but ya. oh an Demons Souls/Dark Souls. another game with some damn good graphics. the story isnt really there. whats there is super interesting (to me, and fans of the game) but you can play the game and never pay attention to the story. but its an amazingly fun game, even solo. its very unique. i probably have more hours logged into that game (Demons Souls..the first one) then i do any other game. i will add that all of those games are Ps3 exclusive (except Dark Souls which was released on xbox 360 as well)...so you cannot blame console for anything. obviously great games can be made on consoles. its the developers fault for not wanting to put the time into the games that are coming out on multi consoles. so stop being a PC elite-est and hating on consoles. Nintii
Alright, I gave this a bit more thought ... and yes, I can honestly say it's the gameplay that wins me over ... I play - whenever I go away on vacation - a really simple and graphically stunted game called Caesar III, the sheer magic of the game is the demand it places on me to create ... it's a city building game ... and I love this type of thing, it really gets me thinking, it keeps me occupied and involved.Same with Cities XL 2011 another city building game that i play and my favorite - though it's not compatible with windows 7 - is Simcity Societies, I used to play this game constantly, the challenge to create was for me a drug and the only fix was more. For my friends here at home it's Scrabble or the mindless casino games they sell for PC.
