Creation Kit straight up does not work for me, I modded with the Skyrim CK and with the FO3 GECK with no problems. I could really use some help.

Recommended Posts

Since it was released, the CK has crashed when I try to do just about anything. I know it's temperamental, but this is way beyond that. I can load into the Commonwealth Sanctuary cells most of the time, but if I try and load into another cell, it crashes. Even if I pan to another cell, outside of Sanctuary, it crashes. If I try and drag anything into the scene it crashes. For some reason the Sanctuary cells seem to be stable, I can move around those easily, but every single time i try and load outside of those cells, it crashes. I have no idea about what could be wrong. I'm hoping it's something in an .ini file, or a setting I missed, because the CK is unusable for me that way it is now. I (usually) spend way more time modding a Bethesda game than I do playing it, I've got 1026 hours in FO4, and the CK was a huge factor in my buying the game, so this has really sucked. I've never gotten an answer anywhere I've asked, including here, but damn I really would like to use the CK.

thanks for any possible idea anyone might have.

Edit. the actual code I get when it crashes is:

An unhandled win32 exception occured in CreationKit.exe[1224].

am using 32 gb RAM, a nvidia 1060, and an i7 4.0 ghz.

Try,

  1. launch the ckit and go to Edit/Pref's and set the "Grids to Load" to 3 (5 is default) Doing this will take a lot of the load off the ckit because your loading only 9 cells instead of the default 25. (do this before you even load your mod or even the Fallout.esm)
  2. In the "Cell view Window" check the box that says "Selected object Only". (this will keep the ckit from loading every ref when you pan the camera or cross over into a different cell.)
  3. open the layers window and turn off layers for FX if there are any.

Note: With the "Grids to Load" set to anything other then 5 you can not do any landscape editing.

Hope that helps it's tricks I use to help with performance in the ckit.

It is still crashing while loading into any cell i try from the cell view window, but thanks for answering chuck. It's gotta be something similar to that though. Actually, I have no idea what is causing the problems, not even a clue.

Sorry it wasn't helpful, My PC is old and somewhat a potato now but, that helps me load cells. I however have also found it's best to close and reload the ckit when I want to go to a different cell. (Example when I have loaded Concord and want to then move to Cambridge. Save my work, Close/re-launch and load Cambridge but, again that probably has more to do with my potato then the Ckit itself.)

The only other thing I can think of is if your video drivers are up to date or not.

Other then the long load times the FO4 ckit is more stable then the FO3 GECK for me.

again sorry I wasn't really helpful.

An unhandled win32 exception occured in CreationKit.exe[1224].

When you get that error there should be an option to view details. That is a very generic Windows error that is essentially useless without the details.

If you're running an ENB config, try renaming the two .dll files or moving them to a different directory before opening the CK. I was occasionally crashing when using it normally and always crashing if I tried to directly open .nif files in it, and after a little bit of searching I learned that the CK really does not play nicely with ENB series. I haven't had any crashes since I started disabling my ENB prior to using it. Edited by Tukster

There is a known issue with CK freezing when trying to open custom outfits on NPCs.

Are you using CBBE vanilla armor replacements? If you are, any cell that has a female NPC in it that has one of the items on will cause the CK to freeze. Also, any NPC you try to open in Actor window will also freeze if they're wearing a vanilla CBBE outfit. I think any custom mesh that replaces a vanilla armor might do it as well but I have not confirmed it.

Sanctuary doesn't have any NPCs in it so you should be able to pan north to Vault 111 with no problem but as soon as you pan south it will run into a female NPC and crash.

What I usually do is re-name the armor and clothes mesh files when I work on CK and re-name them back when I play the game.

No problem chuck, really appreciate the attempt, oh ya, drivers are solid, but nice try :)

damanding, that's all i get for a debug code, a window pops and asks if i want to debug in visbasic (i think), but no more code that I could see.

Dizzasterjuice, I haven't been able to mess with anything, any time I try and bring an item into the viewport, CK crashes. I have not messed with any of the armor or clothing or npc models at all.

Tukster, no man, I haven't been running any ENB stuff. The game itself has be really solid, but the CK hasn't worked at all, ever....I have no idea.

I've actually had the same problem through 2 different machines, I just built a new machine, and it has the same problem with the ck that my older machine did.

I never had any problems with the Skyrim ck, or the FO3...I just don't get it.

If you have

any extra programs that manage multiple monitors/virtual desktops (Actual Window Manager, VirtuaDesktops, etc) turn em off.

any stylus or touch tablets, disconnect them and try to stop the driver services for them.

I have no idea at all why the tablet thing is an issue, but I found a couple of old posts on bethesda's forums saying that unplugging their usb art tablets let them use the render window and pan around without insta-crashing. I couldn't load anything in the render window without instantly crashing until I did both of the above (the first several iterations of the skyrim creation kit HATED any 3rd party program that edited window title bars, like actual window manager does).

However.. Now the CK just waits a couple of minutes of render window usage to crash, sooo your personal mileage may vary. I just wanted to toss those up just in case they can help someone, somewhere.

yet again im gonna have to throw this "log" into the fire...

Can you please tell us how much ram you have and how high you have set your virtual memory ?

A LOT of crashes are due to not enough "room to work" for the CK..

This application is like loading the whole game and more... so IF you have your main drive with barely enough space to do stuff or you dont have enough ram...it will crash continuously.

Make sure your virtual memory is set to max 12GB nothing less than that and that you arent running any ram eating apps in the background.

EDit:

Scratch the ram just saw it..

Also try turning off your firewalls as a test...

Personally i use AVG and it causes a lot of issues unless i disable it.
