Using the new NMM alongside the old one

Hi there,

i'm still using the old version of nmm (56.01) for my Skyrim installation. Never used the new ones because i didn't wanted to do a whole new setup.

But now i'm planning to buy FO4 and i figured that it would be wise to use the new nmm.

Is it possible to use them both? Maybe use an individual installation path/folder?

Thx in advance!

I think you'll need at least 0.61.21 to work with Fallout 4 as that patch fixed a bug Bethesda introduced after an update around that time that made it not be able to enable plugins. I really can't recommend using the latest version of NMM though as it is incredibly buggy and they've stopped supporting it while they build a new one from scratch. Alternatively you can try Mod Organizer 2. It's recently gotten a new developer and support. I've used both.

Okay. Then i'll go for MO2.

But regarding my question: will it work alongside my outdated nmm version? I figured that if you use a new version there'll be conflicts and you could screw up your installation.

MO2 and NMM can definitely be used together. I've used one on Skyrim and the other one on Fallout before without problems. Now if you're trying to use two separate mod managers to manage the same game (where they need to manage the same plugins.txt)...that I don't know I've never tested that.

For what it's worth, I've been using the latest versions of NMM one after the other (am at v0.63.11) and never had any problems. For FO4, I have 1207 mods in NMM, 369 active, 251 plug-ins...

No problems either switching between games or when NMM is open for downloading FO4 mods while I in-between download a mod from the Skyrim SE site and a second NMM opens besides the FO4 one...

Thats valuable information. Not that i won't give MO2 a try but i'm quite familiar with nmm so that would have bee my first choice. But if someone with expierence says its buggy.....

Thanx JimmyRJump for your statement. Donwload FO4 right now. Will give NMM a try

This is the system that I use with 2 versions of NMM:

If you want to use 2 versions of NMM this is the "perfect" setup:

Install the "old" version first, during game scan select all the games you wish to use just with that version.

Install the "new" version in a different folder, during the install process make sure all the file associations are set to go through this version.

Start it, during the game scan enable all the games you had in the old version, plus the ones (I guess Fallout4) you wish to manage with this new version.

Make sure to never start any of the "old" managed game modes with the new version.

When you want to download mods for games you wish to manage with the new version, just click on download with NMM even if the program is not running.

When you want to download mods for games you want to stick to the old version, you MUST run that NMM version first, then you're free to use the download with NMM button and the download link will be passed to the NMM version that is currently running.
