What am I not getting?

I know that Skyrim is supposed to be pretty legendary and I can see glimpses of that. The backdrops and graphics are awesome. The music is great.

I can't get into it. I havn't played the previous Elder Scrolls games so I came into this one fresh. I got the game way back the day it was released and played for a couple of days then left it. I had the game sitting there installed and never once felt the need to play it. Now I am getting into the whole modding thing. I have one in production for FONV which is going really well but I figured I needed to know the game before I could properly figure out what it needed.

I'm having a torrid time with it and I find it really boring. I just finished the first village and did the first dungeon and am headed to Whiterun but I just can't seem to care about the story, my character or anyone'd dialogue. I manage to go about 20 mins before I have to slaughter the whole village for entertainment then reload the save before I did it and carry on.

Why can't I get into this game? I really really want to and this kind of era is exactly the type of stuff I've been interested in for half my life!!

The story actually begins when you go to Whiterun. What's great about the game is its non linear, you can do whatever you like. You can create a backstory for your character before starting the quest, like after escaping, you head of to Riften, and became a member of the Thieves guild for years before eventually joining the rebellion or something. Or you set off on your own, became a mage and on one of your travels to Whiterun you experienced something out of this world that set you on a path to become a hero....

I hear you. I can't quite explain what I love about this game. Before playing it, I totally expected to hate it. It looked boring.

But then something clicked while playing it. I can't say when or what exactly. I think I was just wondering around and realized hours had passed in the real world.

Try this: Ignore most of the dialogue and bad acting. Don't pay much attention to the stories. Think of quests as annoying work. Do the main quest only because you have to. Then you're free to enjoy the best elements of this game which, btw, are non-scripted and just sort of happen. Go for a long walk and see what happens.

Also, try some of the oddly addictive things for me, like mining ore and collecting hides to smith into weapons and armor and then improve those with further smithing. Try playing with collecting ingredients and mixing potions. Just try the stuff that has little to do with questing. You'll be catching chasing butterflies to brew a potion when suddenly out of nowhere (blank) happens and then (blank) and then you can't even remember how or why you ended up across the map.

If you haven't even gotten to Whiterun, I don't think you've given the game and it's story a chance yet...

This game doesn't even need a story to be great, there's so much to do, places to explore, treasure to be found. I don't understand the point of this thread really, the guy simply doesn't enjoy the game for obvious reasons.

If you can't Role play and don't enjoy character building, there is nothing in an RPG for you, unless you're in it purely for storytelling, which he hasn't even sampled yet.

What sorts of games do you normally play? I sometimes find that people who play more linear games such as JRPGs are often stymied at the wide-open sandbox approach. Even if you're used to being able to go about at will, the TES games are big, with lots to see and do. it can be hard to just set off, and you sort of flounder about and never really get into the game.

I just want to reiterate what others have said. I've played Morrowind, Oblivion, FO3 and FNV. And to start with Skyrim seemed the hardest to get into. I was actually kinda bored where you are at. But then things start moving and the plots begin to develop and it's much easier to lose yourself into the game.

So yes, even as a BethSoft 'vet' player I found the start of Skyrim boring, but then... then it set it's hooks...

Seems fairly self answering; if senseless mass slaughter is entertaining to you, Skyrim likely won't hold your interest. There's games that make that play-style fun, but Skyrim ain't one of them.

Seems like what you want is a game that leads you by the nose and tell you what to do, and the only NPCs you really interact with are ones that are crucial to the quest/mission you are on. Unfortunately, TES games have never been like that. And as everyone else has said, if you're still in Riverwood, you haven't even scratched the surface yet.
