[Req Advice] Upgrading GTX 960 2GB to GTX 1070/1080 8GB

Recommended Posts

If I'm right the 680 should be somewhere around the performance of an 1050 ti and an 1060 6GB will give you (depending on title) around minimum 50-60% more performance then the 1050 ti.

The 1070 should easily double a 1050 ti. I would go there with the advice of tripletiger to go with something around an gtx 1060/1070.

Question for you gurus....

I'm more of a "bang for your buck" guy than someone who wants the latest and greatest (just costs too much).

I've a GTX 960 2GB GPU and a few months ago I all but decided to go with a GTX 1070 8GB "Founders" card.

I have a custom case with limited space. The Founders edition cards will fit properly according to the manufacturer.

My power supply is also rated to handle up to a Titan X.

I'm eyeballing these 2 1070 cards at the moment, but I still have some more research to do.

I laid the project down hoping prices would seriously drop over the holidays, but they didn't.

So now I'm starting to look back into it again.

Fwiw, I mostly play heavily modded Fallout NV/4, Skyrim/SSE and Oblivion. So that 8GB of VRAM will be nice.

Any advice or further considerations you have would be much appreciated.

I think the price drops will come on March 10th, when (according to reports) the 1080Ti and refreshed Titan X are released. Apparently Nvidia will release the two ahead of VEGA's launch in May (it will be faster than a 1080 but not a 1080Ti)

W/e you do, don't get the Losers' Edition.

Unless you're doing SLI and even then just get that KFA2 clown thingy, which is essentially the same, but cheaper.

ElectricMessiah: Your prices are crazy for the US.

The same newegg website lists: https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814487265&cm_re=gtx_1070-_-14-487-265-_-Product

Cheaper and actually better.

Thanks for all the feedback folks.

The March 10th advice is really handy. I'll have no problems waiting a few more months.

As for the Losers Edition... About all I know is that they are "I think" the first gen single blower or "reference style" blower.

The manufacturer of my PC/Case states this is the best style for my system/case.

It's this single blower design that I need, due to the space constraints and air flow in a very tight case.

I may have to pay a little extra for a Founder's Edition, but I bought a custom case and knew there would be consequences.

Depends on your gaming, but the reference cooler can easily impose performance limits on high-end cards. I'm not saying you shouldn't buy one, but if you're going to spend several hundred dollars for a video card, imo you should budget another $50 for a proper case to put it in. :)

Also, all case manufacturers will tell you to exhaust hot air to the outside of cases whenever possible. It's in their best interest to give this advice, regardless of how much actual difference it makes in a given system. I certainly wouldn't limit myself to reference coolers based strictly on their advice.
