It's actually a pretty rare event in my experience. Like the Giant fighting the Dragon event or the Vampires fighting the Werewolf. I've only seen the former event once and the latter never, although it allegedly exists.

But damned if I don't keep seeing Maiq the Liar at every damn turn.

Am i the only one who has never been attacked by the thalmor?

Beat the game in vanilla never was attacked nor were they hostile at all

Beaten the game with mods many times same thing.

No. You're not the only one.

I've done numerous play throughs role playing different races & political affiliations and never once had the Thalmor come after me outside of the Embassy quest. I even did a play through as a hardcore Stormcloak Nord who would free every Nord prisoner he saw being escorted by the Thalmor, and never once did I get an assassination bounty for any of those multiple ambushes. Like others have posted, it's just a random event that is not tied into the main game at all.

I did, however, witness a Giant beating down a dragon in one play through and that's the only time I've seen it since.

The only way to get the Thalmor and the Dark brotherhood after you is to complete the main quest up until the point where you slay the first dragon and the greybeards call for you.

That's it, nothing more to it than that. Once rumors of the dragon born start to spread you're a wanted wo/man. My best guess is that the Thalmor, who have the most accurate history books out of any of the races on Nirn, remember what happened the last time they tried to conquer a nation with a dragonborn in it. This is a world after all, where myths and legends just so happen to have a good basis in fact. So if I were the head of a group who stood to lose a lot from having a person such as that around, I'd want them dead too.

This is untrue. Avoided the entirety of the main questline and had both groups after me. While doing the whole main quest killing alduin has had neither come after me.

Random chance?

I liked how they did it in Morrowind. The DB would indeed come after you, singly at first, and if you survived those, more of them would start showing up at a time. That got REAL interesting.....

Of course, with my Selective Fire Crossbow....... Even the DB sanctuary was a breeze...... Walked into a room with a half-dozen or more DB assassins, switched to full auto, and just sprayed the room. They all died without even getting close enough to hit me. That was a SURPRISE, as I didn't think the crossbow was THAT effective. :D

I did kill a patrol of Imperial LEgion in the beginning; maybe that's why the Thalmor showed up (for me). But I got attacked by the Dark Brotherhood right after. Hmmmmm.

Yes, that is why they do that. When you attack that patrol. I think the evidence is in one of the bodies of the thalmor when they start to actively hunt you.
