The Desert Rangers, a forgotten faction.

The Desert Rangers were an important faction in Mojave and Nevada until 2271. After the Great War, Texas rangers who survived the apocalypse started to wander the wasteland acting as law enforcers, hunting the most dangerous predators and protecting towns and settlements from bandits, raiders and tribes as the White Legs and The 80s. When the legion approached to the Colorado, the efforts of the Desert Rangers, and small elite group, where not enough to maintain a large scale war against them, so they joined the NCR in "Ranger Unification Treaty" in 2271, becoming the pride and elite unit of the republic. Most of the Desert Rangers became the “Veteran” rangers, wearing their famous “Black armor”, but a few, went rogue and started to operate on their own, beeing hunted and chased by his former brothers & sisters now working for the NCR.

What I’ve in mind is a set of armors that resembles the personality of the mostly extinct Desert Rangers, descendants of both Texas Rangers and The US army rangers that fought in the Gobi desert campaign. A small elite group of men and women, experts in desert warfare, who are able to cover long distances with few rangers. They remind me some special groups as the British Long Range Desert Group (also called the Desert Scorpions) that made his performance in North Africa in WWII

The disguise of the desert rangers is their traditional armor. A metal chest plate of a riot armor with the customized helmet (radio, gas mask and night vision). To add some variety I purpose different combinations. Keeping the armor chest plate (ADAM’s Helmets mesh and textures are good, it’s no necessary to make a new ones) and a pair of jeans as basis, they could be added over the chest different jackets, coats, ponchos, and vests, not just the duster, which gives usually many clipping problems. Despite of the extras a desert survivalist should have (bags for rations, hand radios, canteens, binoculars…) to resemble the different ability of each ranger, some extras could be added, depending the skill is main, for example a first aid box for the doctor, extra MF cells for the energy weapons specialist, a bandolier with big caliber bullets for the sniper, tools for the engineer…

About the colours for the armor it could be used this classic camo example, good enough for desert (it's the one used for the US marine's raincoats in WWII)

About the faction logo for the armor, the "Lone Star" of the actual Texas rangers could be used, white and black.

Thank you for your time and attention.

I was thinking about something like this. Though I don't necessarily think they should be hunted down, unless they are doing overtly anti-NCR practices. Given the nature of the organization, I would imagine that a lot of them simply wanted to support Mojave Independence and if they did attack NCR it would be covertly. Also, I was thinking that a character playing the Yes Man or House path could join them, and use them in the final battle at Hoover Dam. NCR and Legion could have additional quests to either make them surrender or destroy them, with different methods of getting it done. The Desert Rangers themselves could have infiltration missions set up so that it disrupts both sides of the conflict (I have roleplayed and done this myself with a Legion quest on McCarran, killing the Frumentariius stationed there after sabotaging the NCR).

Overall, I think it would finally be a believable new faction mod that doesn't break lore, rather expand on things that are left unsaid.

About Desert Rangers beeing hunted down… Well the idea came from two sides. The first one is a quote of the veteran rangers in Camp Golf. I’m from Spain, so I play the game in Spanish. The quote is “Vamos a tener una pequeña reunion de rangers, vamos a zanjar unas viejas disputas” the translation (I’m unable to find the quote in the internet) would be “We are having a little ranger meeting, we are going to settle some old disputes”. As well as chief Hanlon's disagrees with the NCR's politics. The other way the idea came is the unofficial “quest” from the mod ADAM to take the Outcast armor, where the outcast is a rogue ranger being followed by the NCR. I just think it could give the mod a dramatic touch and show other of the NCRs big mistake, as the Bitter Springs disaster. They get so obsesed defending their Republic they even try to eliminate the old lawbringers and protectors of the wastelanders

The idea of the need of another kind of ranger armor came to me last week when I remembered a pair of old mods, “new ranger armors” from tumbajamba (http://www.newvegasnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=35312)

which seemed to me to be kinda unfinished (some part of the textures stay in black, need of more female models...), even it was a great idea. The other one was the NVBS (New Vegas Battle Suit), one of the my favorite mods. But as his author was stupid or careless enough to use elements from other registered video-games without advice (that’s against the rules on nexus), so the mod was deleted by the administrators.

I decided to post my idea because I think it could be profitable, without breaking the lore in the game. It could be made just combining the with the plate of the Desert Ranger Combat Armor aka (http://images4.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20110528233616/fallout/images/e/eb/DR_combat_armor.png) and combining it with the already existent meshes and textures of the several outfits in the game. Not just the armor, it can also lead to create a "believable new faction" as you said, with their own quest and even a companion. I like the idea of using them in the battle at the Hoover Dam. As the Enclave has his swan chant, the same should deserve the rangers.

Hm, that Spanish quote is most similar to one in the English game that is entirely different, unless I just haven't heard a more direct version of the Spanish one. It's basically just a Veteran Ranger saying they need to have a Ranger reunion when seeing you with the Ranger armor, as they don't recognize you. Why they would change it for the Spanish version I have no idea.

I suppose I can see why them being hunted down would make sense. It would certainly be another way to make the NCR more overtly morally grey.

Hope some people who actually have skills beyond my meager GECK-tweaking pick this up, or at least use it for ideas. Would be a fantastic mod.

always wondered what happend to the desert rangers they reference them but by game time they just disaper very unrealistic for a group that survived the apocalypse

They where absorbed into the NCR because the Legion was moving into the region and they didn't have enough men to fight the legion and keep the highways safe

I know they were absorbed but you would still expect to find some trace of them or NCR rangers would say that they used to be part of the desert rangers something like that. a group that was that independent wouldn't just disappear without a trace. i always figured that the desert rangers would operate like a volunteer force inside the NCR yet still somewhat independent. kind of like the American eagle squadron durring ww2 or the free polish legions.

To be perfectly fair to the developers, their lack of presence in New Vegas makes absolute sense with the lore they created. It is stated that most of the Veteran Rangers are former Desert Rangers, the rest being NCR Rangers that proved themselves. It does stand to reason that a group of law-bringing renegades such as them may hold some who didn't like NCR rule that keep the faction going, and it isn't stated whether or not that happened in NV. So, that's where this mod would come in.
