vwmc
I'm confused because I see a pinned post/guide warning NOT to clean: https://forums.nexusmods.com/index.php?/topic/2235394-beginners-guide-to-modding/ Also, these files below should NEVER be cleaned no matter what LOOT or any other source says. You have been warned. http://snag.gy/kO6gh.jpg And another guide suggesting to clean: https://forums.nexusmods.com/index.php?/topic/2667094-guide-manual-cleaning-skyrim-master-files/ Cleaning the Official Master ESMs As of Feb 2017 with latest Skyrim from Steam, what is the recommendation? Thanks,-vwmc
ZeroKing
You still need to clean the master files, as suggested by alt3rn1ty.
vwmc
You still need to clean the master files, as suggested by alt3rn1ty. Thanks, Zero! Do you know if it's still needed to clean Dawnguard twice? I ask because I've read the latest TES5Edit will clean some records it didn't use to clean in older versions. Or maybe I should ask, if I clean it twice unnecessarily, is the second clean a no-op that is OK? Thanks again,-v
Kroekr
Actually there is a sticky stating that there are also some errors that need to be removed manually, https://forums.nexusmods.com/index.php?/topic/4591610-guide-skyrim-manually-cleaning-master-files/ . Why it is located in the forum it is in has made me scratch my head until my bald spot got bigger ( that is my story and I a sticking to it). Lol yeah I've followed those extra manual steps too but I'm yet to form an opinion on whether it'll help with stability. BTW, what is your experience on this? More or less stable after cleaning? Kroekr
I don't think that I have noticed any difference one way or the other. But if they are not needed, and should have been deleted before release, I don't see any reason to keep them. Also since I trust Arthmoor's judgement, I make them go away. lofgren
The risks from not cleaning your masters is negligible. You will almost certainly not notice a difference either way whether you do it or not. At this point it's mostly a placebo.

In your experience, what are the most important things to do for a stable game? (please mention tools e.g xedit, mods/tweaks e.g skse memory or similar patches, or anything else you know please)
lofgren
I've never really had many problems with instability in Skyrim, or any Elder Scrolls games really, so I have always suspected that instability came primarily from poor modding practices or a system that simply could not handle the game. I do follow the S.T.E.P. Guide but more for the sake of avoiding issues that I've not yet come across, as even before I started using it I never had a lot of crashes. (After playing Skyrik for many years I did finally clean my DLCs in order to reduce errors in the Creation Kit. I have not noticed any difference in game.) Are we talking about the same game, developed by Bethesda? Joke aside, I'm happy for you since that's your case. :)
