th3overseer
I'm working on a thing right now, and I'd really like it if a central NPC in that thing has a set of custom, unique armor. Problem is, I don't have the software required to even attempt something like that, and even if I did, anything I did make with it would be just the ugliest abomination in recorded history. th3overseer
Right, that comes down to my inability to make anything that would look even slightly passable.
KiCHo666
Then you have to hone your skills. Start with something simple and you'll eventually get there.
dubiousintent
The impression I get is that you don't feel you have any artistic skills. (Standing right there next to you.) The term "custom armor" implies that you basically have some sort of armor in mind, but want to make it unique. That is essentially a "mashup": a "cut-and-paste" job from various existing pieces. No "artistic skill" required, beyond the ability to visualize what you want the end result to be. All the "artsy" stuff already has been done. But the "mashing" together does require learning to use the necessary tools involved. And all the necessary tools are available in "free" versions. As pointed out, you have to start somewhere. Which for your purposes is the "Tools and Programs" and "Armor and clothes" sections of the "Getting started creating mods using GECK" article. Your only alternative is to go begging in the "New Vegas Mod Requests" sub-forum and see if you can describe your vision sufficiently to entice someone to do the same work for you. It's the old "feed someone a fish or teach them to fish" story. We're big on "fishing" around here. -Dubious- Edited February 12, 2017 by dubiousintent
th3overseer
I've had more than one art teacher who could probably attest to my bizarre inability to ever draw gud, so I think I'm pretty dead in the water on that front. As far as personally mashing something up, at the most basic level, it'd be the Kings jacket, but with a Great Khan logo on the back, which seems like it would require messing with textures more than anything. Get gimp and the .dds plugin, open a texture with the khans logo, trace it with free select, click edit -> copy, open the kings outfit texture, use one of the acrylic brushes on the airbrush tool at about 60% opacity and gently layer over the kings logo with different colors picked with the eyedropper from the area near it. Once it's covered well enough, use the clipboard brush with the kahns logo where it was. I like to use the airbrush tool so that you can still see a little bit of the jacket's texture underneath it. th3overseer
Best case scenario, anything I made wouldn't be awful. I'd prefer if people who play the mod see the companion and go: "Hey, that's pretty cool!"
Mktavish
Best case scenario, anything I made wouldn't be awful. I'd prefer if people who play the mod see the companion and go: "Hey, that's pretty cool!" Chances are every successive attempt will get better. So the only reason you need to get started is for your own enjoyment.
th3overseer
Sure, but I've never made any armor before. I'd just like it so that people who download the mod will think the whole thing is good, instead of going: "Yeah, it was well written, good acting... The armor was ugly, but the rest was good."
