Making Money From Gaming

Hey Guys,

I am writing a book called how to make money from gaming as the topic states. I am still in the planning stage and would like to know what sort of things all of you would like to see in a book on this topic. I am reffering mainly to questions such as (How do i get noticed as a proffesional gamer) but suggestions are welcome as well. Leave a reply with your email address.

Hey jcox26

While I've never actually thought of the two words 'professional' and 'gamer' next to each other, (kind of an oxymoron in my eyes!) I am still intrigued by it. I know some people who make money from 'gaming' as such. For instance; I have a friend at college who tests out new, obscure beta versions of console games and also tests out new consoles and computers. I know she was one of few who tested out the Nintendo 3DS a while back.

I think the first thing that would be suitable for your book would be to describe what a professional gamer is, and how I can get that job!

Well there's the competitive e-sports scene of course. Starcraft 2 tournaments with over a million dollar prize pool.

How you exactly get into these kind of tournaments I have no idea though. Lots and lots of playing I suppose, going to smaller tournaments, making a name for yourself.

Bit skeptical on the prospects of a professional gamer. Fame might be gained via exceptional skill levels on a very popular game, for worldwide competitions and the likes. Though I find the time/efforts invested might not justify the rewards. Perhaps when gaming becomes a very popular spectator event, celebrity gamers might benefit from it.

Being a charismatic and/or creative gamer can help achieve fame on youtube. Case in point would be Felicia Day who did something unique with her gaming passion. Also not forgetting the handfuls of popular Let's Play youtube commentaries by avid gamers.

Also the potential value in research application. Being proficient in these games might lead somewhere.

MLG is getting paid for gaming. Gamebattles is something I did with COD4 and MW2 for a while, and in total, I got $8,000. Of course, I only did that for around 4 years.

Youtube also pays for some people to create commentaries and game videos, eg, COD XP gameplay, if you posted enough and got a huge audience, Youtube could set you up with something to get paid.

Hi HeyYou

Thanks for your input. You raise a very valid question and the answer is "not yet"!

I have been a very keen casual gamer for many years since the Nintendo 64, have done some modding and have competed in some minor competitions. I have no delusions of granduer, however I am very interested in the idea of making money from gaming and related online activities, hence I am doing a lot of research on the topic which I plan to share in this book.

If you have any ideas and / or would like a copy of the book PM me.

Cheers
