Starting Oblivion

I can't personally compare Oblivion to Skyrim (haven't played), but if you liked it, you should feel at home in Oblivion as well. The default graphics won't be as good, and you will find things that aren't as "smooth" as Skyrim, but there are also a lot more options/variety/freedom as well. One thing that Oblivion does have over Skyrim still is the vast amount and variety of mods. I'd say go for it if you're interested, but really only if you can take another Bethesda, open-world time-consuming game. FYI, Steam has been putting Oblivion on discount somewhat often lately, usually for $5 for the regular GOTY and $6.24 for the Deluxe (hard to beat the price for the content).

If you enjoyed Skyrim's gameplay, Oblivion's is very similar. No class mods are needed as you can create your own custom class at the beginning of the game. Along with attributes like Strength and Intelligence, character creation/levelling is more involved than Skyrim as a result (for many that's actually a good thing).

I found Oblivion's questlines to be far superior to that of Skyrim's "become the guildmaster in one hour" questlines. Combat doesn't have quite the smoothness or cool-factor as Skyrim, but it is more than acceptable.

As ponyboy10 mentioned, the default graphics won't be as good, but given the number of graphics mods out there, it can be made to look spectacular (and cripple any computer on the market). The only areas that I find a fully modded Oblivion can't really compare to Skyrim is the distant detail of the mountains and the water animations (though in terms of water transparency and refraction, Oblivion's OBGE Liquid Water mod easily beats default Skyrim IMHO).

Basically, I can 100% recommend Oblivion unless you liked Skyrim only for its mountains, or specific Skyrim-only features like finishing moves or dual wielding.

Thought I'd break the ice with my first post here in these forums, and reply to this post.

Skyrim was my first TES game, and it hooked me real good. The lore intrigued me, so the logical next step was to play Oblivion.

Let me tell you, I really struggled going from Skyrim to Oblivion... Skyrim is just so pretty.... But...

Once I grabbed some of the essential mods, and just accepted it for what it is, an older game, I've found myself really enjoying Oblivion, in many ways more than skyrim, because...

I've come to see what many of the TES veterans are talking about when they say Skyrim is a "watered-down Oblivion." There's more to the role-playing aspect of Oblivion, it's a bit more complex "under-the-hood."

I'm still new, but I'd recommend getting it. I'll probably do morrowind after. The lore, as I said, is really pulling me in.

FWIW.

@justwannaddl...

Exactly. It's amazing, actually. Every time I've said to myself "I wish the game did this or did that," I just come here and chances are there's a mod that answers my whim.

Skyrim, I would think, will take off the same way.

Then hopefully the modders will make it more like Oblivion.

Nice thing about playing Oblivion now is that the best mods are already available. :3

It's...certainly difficult to compare Skyrim and Oblivion. Not that one is genuinely better than the other one, so don't think that. It's more like...they are almost different animals. It's like...sure, they are both Finches, but there are plenty of differences between them to make them individuals...

For all the crap I give Oblivion, it's a fun, addictive, and all-around great game. But, if Skyrim is your first Elder Scrolls game, I have to make the suggestion of possibly picking up Morrowind. I got Morrowind after playing the hell out of Oblivion. Again, two different beasts entirely, but still just as fun as Skyrim if not more so.

Morrowind, Oblivion, Skyrim...I'm never going to get back to finishing my world map in Sim City 4, am I? xD

Like I mentioned above, getting over the initial "This doesn't look anything like skyrim" trip was the biggest challenge. Once I did that, Oblivion's strong areas revealed themselves.

Oblivion has its quirks, and the AI, at least vanilla, so far as I've experienced, isn't as advanced as Skyrims. Enemies seem to have a preference, and obsession, with attacking the player, even when other enemies are around. I hear Morrowind is a lot more like that, Oblivion being an improvement, and it seems, Skyrim now over Oblivion.

Any Oblivion AI mod suggestions that improve over vanilla are certainly welcome, if anyone cares to recommend...

Lot of texture replacement mods for Oblivion, so you can make it look as good or better in many respects than Skyrim. Whether your system will allow this without much slowdown depends on how good it is.

Also, tons of other mods. Revamping the magic system. Adding huge quest lines. Some very personalized companion mods. Excellent journal mod. Hundreds of house mods for every need. Thousands of extra weapons, armor, etc.

To get a flavor of quest variety, check out this site. Hasn't been updated in a year, since the maintainer had a child, but it's still a remarkable list. Just be sure to read comments before downloading on the appropriate sites, as these can point out incompatibilities with still other mods.

And check out the advanced search categories here on Nexus, of course. Enjoy. :)

The AI will have it's quirks - it's hard-coded or something and I don't think there is any mod that actually fixes it. OOO helps, especially with the monster AI - makes it seem more realistic and dangerous. If you are brave you can try and install FCOM. It's a pain in the arse to get started, but when you do...profit. :D
