Holy Hell is this frustrating. Mine started with being unable to enter or exit a building or city with a gate without getting stuck on a black loading screen. Then it morphed to the point of getting a CTD any time I tried to quicksave or do a regular save. I deleted SkyBirds, Birds of Skyrim, Diverse Dragons and Footprints. I was then able to load a save and re-save without getting a CTD.

I also cleaned my save using ReSaver and can load that save fine, then resave again without issue.

Now I'm back to the point where if I exit Elysium Estate I get stuck on the loading screen.

The odd thing I'm seeing now, is that after closing Skyrim, there's an autosave of me outside of Elysium Estate that I can load, resave just fine. ReSaver isn't catching any issues, and I made sure there was nothing left from any of the mods I deleted.

I'm at about 110 hours on this save, the size is 8.9MB and I'm at level 32.

I'm running out of things to try besides starting over again, which is such a pain.

Elysium Estate is a mod, right? That might be a different issue entirely. Have you tried teleporting somewhere else using the console?

I may have figured it out. I tried the option in ReSaver to "Remove Non Existent Form Instances" and now it seems that I can save without CTD as well as go anywhere and enter any building without issue as well. The only thing I need to see is what mods might have been affected by that action. I noticed my MCM menu is a few mods shorter, but don't remember what was there.

Well then, seems I'm just one more person to add to the list here, but surprise, I'm crashing on quicksave (have yet to try any other save methods). The issue only just came up, and It's only on one save, so far as I know. As does nearly everyone in this topic, I've got Diverse Dragons. So, after doing some reading, I disabled it in NMM, and loaded up my game without doing anything more. Save game corrupt. Yay. Went into Resaver, and got rid of all script instances for it on the one save I'm working with right now, and then the game loads up just fine. Unfortunately, for some reason, that Fallrims tools program won't launch for me at all. So, because that wasn't working, I skipped it, and surprise, CTD on quicksave. Only difference this time around is that rather than being instant, it took just long enough for the game to tell me that it was quicksaving before committing suicide. I've got about 90 hours total on Skyrim, that being split between five different characters because I refuse to just do one playstyle, so that probably isn't the issue. Might be worth mentioning that the save game I'm working with is done right outside of Volkihar(?) Castle. Alsom because I'm an idiot, I tend to only save when I'm done playing the character, and then save over my last save, meaning I have no save game to go back to. This is true for all five characters. If it matters any, here's the load order I'm trying to go with, after disabling Diverse Dragons.

Hi RyuKizoku. Resaver should be the only tool you need from FallrimTools. Did you remove both the unattached instances and the undefined elements? It's worth a try.

If that doesn't work, most people have found that they need to go back to an older save. :( Sorry.

Well, according to Resaver, there are no unattached instances or undefined elements. By chance do you have any suggestions that don't involve starting over with the character? I've made a good bit of progress with with multiple questlines, and would hate to have to start from scratch. And the worst part about this is that all of my save games had Diverse Dragons on them, so if it is indeed the problem, I'm likely going to lose all of my save games...

Well, I'm assuming that you've tried following the fix to the letter:

  Reveal hidden contents

I'm guessing that on any save where you met one of those dragons who happen to be diverse will be irredeemable. You didn't get anything at all in Resaver? That's odd. Pretty much everyone who has had this bug has had something. How many hours into the game are you getting, and have you determined whether or not you can make other types of saves?

In oldrim this bug could also occur if you were running mods that were dependent on SKSE without it, or if the version of SKSE wasn't up to date with what was required. Do any of your mods require SKSE64, and are you running it? Also, are any FNIS mods installed properly? It might be worth double-checking.

Sorry for the bad news . I lost over 200 hours across 2 saves trying to figure this thing out, so I feel your pain. My current playthrough, however, is pretty healthy and is sitting just over the 200 hour mark, so we do seem to have identified the issue correctly.

Hi all, I'm getting CTD issues on save as well. I read your first post and I am getting very similar issues/symptoms.

The first time I encountered the issue I wasn't sure what was causing the issue. I looked through the Papyrus logs and the SKSE crash dump, but none of it really helped.

Decided to start trying to deactivate mods and I narrowed down the culprit to the mod MoreBanditCamps. Disabling that allowed me to save the game... at least for a few hours. Ran into the issue again while in Soul Cairn. This time the problem seemed to be Convenient Horses. So I disabled it and I am able to save again.

Judging by the pattern, I'll probably run into the issue again later down the line, but I want to avoid that.

Poking around with ReSaver with my latest save, I notice that the script instance count is at 350k, and an active script count of less than 10. Not sure if the script instance is correlated with my save issue, but I won't rule it out.

For the record, I have around 200 hours in my playthrough. And this is my load order:

  Reveal hidden contents

For the crash dump, I use some online analyzer to translate the dump file. It probably isn't very useful for us, but it might be worth sharing. Here's a snippet of what gets outputted:

  Reveal hidden contents

Here are some other interesting tidbits:

  • ReSaver shows that I have unattached instances. Deleting them is only temporary as those instances appear again after I load the save and save. Don't think it's a related issue though.
  • Anytime I load an affected save, I am able to immediately save the game without issue. It is only moving around in the cell/worldspace that I encounter crash on save issues
  • Moving around from one cell to another and waiting for a period of time seems to temporarily fix the issue. That is, I will use a teleport spell to teleport home, wait a day or two, and then save the game without issue
  • I have some number of mods I ported over from LE to SE myself.
  • My save file size is about 23mb
  • I use console commands to make hard saves and barely use quicksaves nowadays. It's super convenient as I can just a random string for the save name; and when I want to save, I just press the console button, press the up arrow, type a random letter, and hit enter. Much faster than going through the menu.

Hi joemodda. Sorry to hear that you're having this problem. If you've read through my original post you'll have noticed that removing ANY mod will temporarily fix the problem, so you may not have found the actual culprit. Looking through your modlist, I'm noticing that you have Diverse Dragons, which several others have mentioned as being the problem for them.

Have you tried the fix to the letter? I've got it posted in the post just above yours.
