Moraelin
Well, maybe, but then the same could be said about most other factions, isn't it? I mean, why join the Railroad if you're not going to go full-tilt about immediately saving any synth that needs saving, and thwarting whatever coursers are out looking for the RR, like, right nao? Why sign up to save the commonwealth from the Automatron robots, if you're then going to ignore that Ada knows exactly where some went to murderize some people? I mean, they're commonwealth settlers too. It even says "Settler" when you look at them. Seriously. Shouldn't I be all over Ada to stop THOSE from being murderized by some robot? Etc. I think you might agree that all those questions have at least SOME merit. Thing is, though, all those seem to work just as well without the quest giver forcing them on me. Moraelin
Mind you, just for full disclosure sake, I don't HATE Preston, mostly because I can't be bothered. But he does get to sleep under the bridge, with the other two annoying trolls, Marcy and Jun. I considered moving him to the Mechanist's Lair so I don't get to hear him ever again, but then I remembered what a wise man... err... synth once told me, "I always figured trolls preferred bridges to tunnels."
montky
@gruffyddindeed and well said.there are options, well, there were in FO3, FONV etc.there are a few in FO4, though nowhere near as many as in previous titles,to be fair, FO4 does some things at scale that no prior title has,and there are a lot of mods underway which address that. It's all about customization and FORPG/GURPS-ing.if folks don't want to play out-of-the-box vanilla, they can use mods,if folks don't like the minutemen, or the premise of FO4... they don't have to join the minutemen,or buy into FO4.I know a lot of fallout fans who don't like anything after Fallout Tactics, so FO1 and FO2 are 'canon'.some only like post Tactics, so, FO3, FONV and FO4...there are quite a few different continuities emerging, which almost verges on 'no-true-Fallout-Fan" territory. This can only be a good opportunity for the IP holders though, because now they can have more "what-if" spinoffs, and more continuities to explore. @allthis has turned to be quite and interesting lore discussion and what not, tangents notwithstanding.I'm amazed at some of the awesome vids that people have put on the radar, and linked in these discussions. These kinds of discussions have been rare in a lot of locales,I must say. a lot of folks would give in to temptation to not have a discussion, for fear of this or that T&C, or 'rocking a boat' too much,so we all miss out on having awesome lore discussions and ideas brainstorms, which can lead toawesome mods as a byproduct further down the line. I had no idea folks had so many awesome perspectives on FO lore and onexegetical stuff and art in general, so that was awesome to see.thanks for sharing that. I'm looking forward to seeing where this discussion will continue, as I'm sure a character likeGeneral Garvey is quite a popular subject that people will have a stance on. I think you might agree that all those questions have at least SOME merit. Thing is, though, all those seem to work just as well without the quest giver forcing them on me. I actually consider some of that a flaw in the DLC. If you ignore the Automatron robot quests, they should start attacking your settlements, not just sitting patiently waiting for you to go take the quests. As to the Railroad, if I remember correctly you're asked before you join and as a condition of joining if you'd die to save a synth or some such. They're pretty committed to it, and if you're not, why are you telling them you are and joining them? Out of some completionist I-must-join-every-faction compulsion? The difference with the Minutemen faction is that you are defending/maintaining the settlements, which are an active player-owned part of the game. You've built them, you've committed to their protection (when you agreed to lead the Minutemen), and now you get to defend/help them... or not. The choice to complete the quests is yours, as is the choice to go anywhere near Preston or the Castle or turn on Minutemen radio to get assigned more of the quests. It's almost a shame that the other faction's radiant quests aren't more time-sensitive, and have no real impact on your settlements, as it ends up giving no real incentive to do any of them other than RP/xp/compulsion to complete everything. With the Minutemen at least there's a consequence, however minor, when you blow one off.
Fatalmasterpiece
Personally the voice acting is terrible. It sounds flat and lifeless, uninspired from a script.
Moraelin
@Gruffydd I suppose you're more dedicated there than I am. A lot nicer to those settlers too. Fair enough. Kudos, even. Me, I seriously don't remember actually signing up for any of that, though. In fact, the conversaion _I_ had with Preston was about helping rebuild and organize the Minutemen. He quite distinctly said he can lead some guys in a firefight himself ("That's not who I am. I can get my men through a firefight. I can defend a perimeter against all odds."), and apparently just needs some big leadership figure to rebuild the minutemen. There are a couple of variations of it, depending on what choices you take in the dialogue, but they're just variations of the same: "We just need better leaders. Leaders who will put the good of the Commonwealth ahead of their own little group." I'm looking through his dialogue right now, and I seriously don't see anything about signing up to be Preston's personal underling ever after. No matter what path I look at through that dialogue, I just can't find where it says that he gets to order me around ever after. Nor where it says that must personally be the only one who personally defends every single farmer in the commonwealth, because apparently nobody else in those Minutemen can be bothered unless I personally hold their hand. Admittedly, in my stint in the army, i never was an officer, but my impression was that the chain of command works top to bottom, not the other way around. We didn't actually have a general in our unit, it only went up to colonel, but we had one or two visit on occasion. I'm under the impression -- perhaps mistaken, but hey -- that if I just up and went to one and told him I'll just put some place he needs to go to on his map, I would have gotten in fairly serious trouble  Hell, if I pulled that stunt with our sergeant, the consequences would not be pleasant. So, you know, when he said he needed a leader to rebuild the Minutemen, and that he can handle leading men and defending a position, I kinda thought I'm signing up for literally that. I definitely didn't expect what actually happens from then on. That's just not what I was saying "OK, I'll do it." to. Now mind you, I did eventually learn that I can just move his bed under the bridge, with the other two trolls, and I could stick to the Red Rocket to do my weapon and armour upgrading. It has ALL the workstations, you know? So I just linked my supply routes to that one, and haven't had to see Preston ever since. Well, except when I do the drug runs for Mama Murphy. But hey, she's in that chair 24/7, so I can do it at 2 AM when the three little trolls are sleeping under their cozy little bridge. But it took some getting annoyed by Preston before that dawned upon me, so I guess some warning before I signed up would have been nice.
Moraelin
THAT said, you seem to somewhat overestimate the importance of those radiant quests even for the Minutemen. Even for kidnappings, the countdown doesn't actually start until you actually get the quest. So avoiding Preston saves lives  Edit: hmm, now I kinda want to make some "avoiding Preston saves lives" posters to plaster all around Sanctuary

Maybe if a few settlers bowed in my presence or baked me a cake or something I'd feel warm and fuzzy about the whole thing! I can understand the dislike for Preston. He more of a robot than any other in the game. Hey Preston whats up?- " There is another settlement that needs OUR help". Preston whaddya think about....- " Just heard about more settlers needing help". I literally could have written a better char when I was four. He eats, craps, and breathes MM. I don't hate him. I just avoid him as much as possible. Human speed-bump. :D The reason people feel more strongly about Piper is because she has a personality. That and she doesn't seem to have a huge stick up her ass. But even she annoys me with her morality check on everything I do. Cait and Maccready are my favs. And I honestly don't care about saving settlers all the time. What I do care about is some Raider idiot destroying my stuff!! :woot:
Ondrea
While I don't "hate" Preston, the longer I've played FO4 on various characters I've realized it's a lot more than one or two things about him that has me somewhat avoiding him. I modded out the constant quests, but that still left me with some gripes. I don't like settlement building and worrying about settlers' happiness and needs. I have enough worrying about that stuff in real life, I play for escape. I wish they could have separated that feature from leading the Minutemen and defending them. I don't mind running to the settlements when they're in trouble. I just don't want to manage settlements. Preston has a very narrow views and expects your character to fall in line with them. On one of my BoS runs, I didn't want any synth technology knowledge escaping the Institute so didn't enable the evacuation call. Boy, he never let me forget about that one and brought it up any time I got near him, refusing to be a companion. Meanwhile, he was fine with blowing up the Prydwen with all the kids in it. If your character really is General, you should have options to explain your decisions to Preston. And speaking of General, why is Preston getting all the thanks and gifts when we're visiting settlements, while they tell me I've got a suspicious look about me and am there to possibly cause trouble. That just adds to Preston annoyances, although that's the game's flaw not his. Preston's personality is really awkward to the point where he makes me uncomfortable to be around. I know some criticize the voice actor but I think his character is just intended to be that way. He himself talks about how naive he is. And that conversation when you max affinity shows his lack of resilience. Anyway, there's just a lot of stuff related to Preston that makes me tend to avoid him and the Minutemen. And not all his character's fault, it's just game design. On the plus side I have a mod that has him whistling the tune from the Andy Griffith show, so I don't mind him walking around Sanctuary. Moraelin
BTW, just as a tip, I found that managing settlements is a lot easier when I just control how many people there are and when do more get to come in. E.g., with the super-mutant and/or ghoul settler manager. Then I can spawn like 6 of them, assign them, and not worry about having to find places to put more beds every couple of days.
