Yep followers do suck.

Things that need to be changed I believe are:

• More options, such as how close/far to stay.

• What sort of fighting style they should use melee, long ranged, or magic.

• Better trap detected: Followers are dumb as rocks, not able to see a trap especially one I managed to trip by mistake as well.

• Mounts for Followers: Sick and tired of followers lagging behind when I ride my horse, they should be able to ride horses.

• Path finding sucks.

I guess Bethesda didn't take into account how popular Obsidian's companion wheel for FONV really was.

I believe, and I am sure others do as well, that beth put most of companion system work into allowing the player to order them where to go. Ordering them to pick things up. Pick locks. And so on. Which I think was taken from a mod that was made waaay back for Oblivion. But the problem with ordering them places is when you try to order them to a spot on the other side of a rock, they say,"Not possible", and I am like,"dammit just walk over the damn thing like I do!!!!!". Yeah it gets annoying from time to time :wallbash:

Bethesda just ranks the whole companion system well bellow world building and everything else they do well. Personally i would take a 90% cut in the number of possible companions if it gave us a Bioware level companion system - that's something they know very well and excel at (environments...not so much)

This. The thing Bioware sucks at is remembering that you don't necessarily role play a freaking tank that likes to be the first (and generally only) one attacked by all the enemies. And letting you run away when things get touchy. And a stealth system that makes any sense. But at least their companion system doesn't suck.

One thing I will say about followers is there is a good variety of characters to choose from. Most Bioware or similar games let you pick between like 4-6 people and if you don't like any of them your SOL. That being said, it's not like Skyrim's followers are very deep or complex. They all need more personality and interesting quirks; it's quantity vs. quality.

I'd like to see the followers more advanced.

Followers should be an essential part of the game.

But even if they weren't so fundamentally flawed that they slow the player down (having to wait for them etc.), i probably wouldn't use them because you never get any experience/skillups for anything they do.

So unless i plan to play a merchant/thief type of character with only lockpick/speech/pickpocket, there's no reason to use them as soon as you're strong enough to deal with combat on your own.

Indeed.

I wish for an overhaul mod. Maybe not all the followers at first, but the ones that play fairly significant roles in quests and such.
