Creation Kit, How to edit NPCs?

Hey guys, simple question i have here.

Im trying to get rid of the dirt from Gerdurs face (shes one of the first NPCs you meet in Riverwood if escaping with the stormcloaks and her dirty face has always annoyed me)

so i loaded her up in the Creation Kit, under Actors > Nord Race > Female > Gerdur

then select her 'Character Gen Parts' go to FemaleHeadDirt_01 and turn down the 'Interlopation Value' from 1 to 0 which makes it dissapear so shes clean, and she does look clean in the Creation Kit

Save it.

However in-game shes still has the dirty face, (i have this mod loaded last so it should over-ride anything that may interfere)

(also trying to do the same with Sigrids head as well but with no luck)

any suggestions as to what i may be doing wrong? maybe theres a box or something that needs to be selected in the Creation Kit im not doing?

thanks

There is a bug in there somewhere. There is a fix for it, though I haven't tried it myself.

Ok, I found a fix that works for pre existing/editted NPCs, it does not work for newly created NPCs. This is from one of the staff on the Beth forums, I tried it, it works and it is quite easy.

Here's a technique that helps when modifying an NPC from the base game.

•Locate some pre-existing NPC. I chose Hadvar.

•Edit the Actor > Character Gen Parts tab. I decided to make a drastic lip color change

•Click MaleHeadNord_Lips.dds in the left-sice "Face Tint Layers" list

•Click "Select Color" - choose something extreme, like a neon green

•Slide "Interpolation Value" all the way to the right (1.0)

•Click OK

•In the Object Window, find the base Actor you've just edited.

•With the Actor(s) selected, press ctrl+F4. Click "Yes" when prompted to export.

•This will create a DDS and a TGA in ...\Syrim\data\Textures\Actors\Character\FaceGenData\FaceTint\Skyrim.esm

•Note: The TGA is not really neccessary, as the DDS should be uncompressed.

•With these textures in place, run the game and test your NPC. Note that the plugin changes need not be saved.

When asked about it working for newly created NPCs his reply was "Unfortunately not. That's an issue we are looking into."

  • 3 years later...

i'm wanting to edit an npc (Lydia) stats. i want to turn her into something resembling Janessa (light armor combat rogue type) but the above mod http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/4554/?

makes my game CTD after editing. can something like this be done with just CK? if so, how?

That mod is outdated, I don't recommend it. When you fire up the CK, immediately make a save, name it Lydia or whatever. It will make an esp file for you. That will be the active file you work from so you don't mess up anything in the core game. Then open up Lydia in Actors by clicking on her listing. You can make her into whatever you want then, give her new weapons, armor, hair, ai package, whatever. When you are done save again. All of your changes are incorporated in the esp file as a mod - you didn't change the core game files, the esp will override them on loading. You need to activate the esp file to make the game load it for this to happen - I use NMM but the Launcher will do it as well. Note that some changes can take awhile to take place if there are scripts/quests involved, the game saves the original version in the savegame file.

You must load your mod in the game _before_ you meet Lydia for the first time in dragonsreach for the changes to take effect. Once her character is created in your save file, the mod that you create will not change her if loaded afterwards. Or worse, it may change some things just enough to break her character in your save file.

Also, if you make any changes to her appearance, remember to find her character in the "Actor" tab in the CK and type Ctrl+F4 to export Facegen data or you will get face-body mismatches.

alrighty then. thanks for the help. i guess i need to start a new game Lol. until then, who's the best thief follower in the game? in trying to legitimately rp a warrior be it tank or dps i'm not using magic or stealth of any kind. can't very well sneak in heavy armor. Lol so i need to find someone in game who can follow me around and do the lockpick thing. any suggestions?
