fathisu
I currently run Oblivion at 800x600 with almost all settings on low and I get decent framerates (usually 20-30 outdoors, 50+ indoors). My computer has a 2.8ghz P4 processor, 1gb of ram, and a 128mb Radeon 9800 pro, and I am running Windows XP. I've heard that OOO may degrade performance because of new high-res textures, especially on older hardware. Is this true? If so, would I notice a significant drop in framerate with my configuration? Thanks for reading.
worm82075
My guess would be yes, but that is a matter of memory. Get more as soon as you can, another gig will make a world of difference trust me. I recently upgraded from 1 gig to 3.5 and all my problems with lag went away and not just in Oblivion but my entire operating system.

Thanks for reading. Sadly it is true, yet there are something you can ever do to enhance overall performance, if you not did already. Among various performance meant mods there are some I found efficient, like Streamline Quiet Feet Operation Optimization and some other mods then deals with grass, but I have not clue about these.Streamline will need OBSE, but this is not a major issue as OBSE is one of the must have imho Returning to OOO, yes, it is performance impacting but there are things that can be made to minimize this. If OOO was not so a huge DL I would have not doubts in saying you to try as you taking the last OMOD version would be not insanely hard to uninstall. If you ever try it, assuming the performance ones above gave you enough confidence in so doing, One thing you must do as the impact on overall gaming is minimal and in FPS is huge is turning off the sub aquatic flora, since it would slug things just you being near water. OOO is such a different Oblivion experience it is aways worth a try. hope this helped Edit: Since one the most restraining item in your rig is the somewhat old video card to the highly demanding games of today. Textures are really the most performance damaging, as the VRAM needed increases very quickly with then. Is where Operation Optimization come in, 'breaking' then in lesser bricks easing the digest even for more updated Vcards. 1GB RAM is acceptable in most of cases as you are already keeping things at low demand. Experimenting is the only true way to be sure between the 'can be done' and the 'is worth some sacrifice' choices
worm82075
One thing Nosisab is absolutely right about is your video card, you can get a nice 512 with ddr2 for just over a 100$ US. Fathisu, Since you have a single core processor and you are not happy with vanilla textures, on top of the new video card it is imperative you have more memory if you want to use the high resolution textures available and if you want to mod the game with maximum efficiency. DDR2 3700-5200 1gig 667 mhrtz cards are about 100$US

But sadly there are some issues when, like in my case, hardware are imported products, US ones doubles tag price when we got them :/ worse, when we can even got the better ones since most vendors will have the very low end and low cost scrap to offer :verymad: With Internet and Electronic commerce things got a little better, forcing all chain up. But yet cost is double and the low end is ruler. I had a very good opportunity and grabbed it merrily when a friend was coming back from Canada and willing (well, at least not complaining very loud) to bring me some things. So I could have a relatively decent machine to the time at reasonably cost. Now I'm planning to do a new upgrade sometime near mid year. And I will need to think hard about the max I can get for the budget. Yet I have already a SLI mobo, it is a now obsolete 939 AMD based, DDR only and just this will be forcing to upgrade the whole machine.
