Lurel successfully completes the earthwork. The members of the Held swarm up and begin building the lattice fence at the top.

Your friend says "We can certainly build an area in which kids can play but who is going to look after it? We are all busy as you surely noticed as you came through the village."

"Indril - look after children!!!!" He pauses and says. "Then again - but why don't you ask her. If you say we wouldn't like to bother her with something so mundane..." He waves cheerily and clambers up the new earthwork to join his colleagues.

Lurel makes his way back to Indril.

'Maybe that is it.. we had to find a new purpose for her - I only hope that she won't consider it an insult, and take it to mean that all she is fit for now is looking after the children...'

"I helped with the earth wall," he announces to Indril. "And I got talking to the fence builders... they mentioned that there isn't a lot of room, and that it would be good if the children had somewhere to play."

He pauses and uses his empathy skill to gauge Indril's reaction.

"I suggested that this place would be great for kids - you know, build them a treehouse and things to climb and swing on... it would certainly help let them run off some energy, and let the adults get on with their tasks. I imagine there's more than enough to do, so shortly after you've moved."

Again he pauses.

"The fencebuilders didn't want to bother you with such a mundane problem, but I got the impression that having somewhere for the kids to play is something that would be good for everyone's morale... and I imagine a lot more would get done if the kids aren't underfoot all the time. But the problem is, they said, that nice as it would be to have a play area, someone needs to watch it, and supervise the kids so they don't get into mischief. So I wondered..." His voice trails off, as he waits for Indril to respond.

Ford nods to Varna and then looks down at the girl.

"Er, oh... really... that's nice."

He just barely manages to give her a slight smile, starting to feel thoroughly depressed by the situation. He then moves on with Moppitt. He glares at Moppitt after his comment.

"That's an awful thing to say, whether you meant it or not! Life is life, and we should do our best to preserve it... even if it is... like this..."

He looks sadly to the children.

"After all, there may yet be some sort of medicine or spell or something to counteract this. Until then we need to defend these kids from harm... although I didn't quite realise I was signing up for undertaking duties."

Lurel

Indril's reaction is hostile but Lurel's empathy tells him to leave a bit of time for her to think of the idea.

Ford

Moppitt stares at you angrily. "Who are you to act so superior? Why should I care about kids when even the citizens of Heidal couldn't be bothered with them?"

Again Ford can hear behind the words. Moppitt is close to tears. But boys don't cry - do they?

"I'll go and see what Ford and Midge are doing," Lurel suggests. "Maybe there's something else I could help with."

He leaves, to give Indril some time to get used to the idea, hoping that she will come to like the idea.

'Of course she needs time.... I don't think it's something that occurred to her before, and I suppose it's rather different to being the best hunter... but hopefully if she gets a chance to think it over she'll come to like the idea.'

He goes in search of Ford and wanders over to where the children from Heidal are.

Lisette and Siffli

You move slowly towards the square certain that some of the buildings on either side of you are inhabited. The inhabited square is one block east of the central square. Here the buildings are four storey. The square itself contains a dry fountain and a number of brightly coloured tents. Some are opened to show them to be shops selling food, basic items of clothing and household use. Four women are chatting by the dry fountain while other mixed groups sit or simply idle time away in the vicinity.

Ari and Midge

Midge continues to paint the plates with the exotic birds he has seen on his travels elsewhere. Ari is directed towards the area where the children from Heidal are looked after. As he is indistinguishable from the guards he is assumed to be one.

Lurel

Lurel is approached by Vreli. "You are not the one." She seems to read something in his face. "His name is Zekic. If you meet him, tell him he is the one."

The child, Wrenn, has just died. Varna is sadly lifting the pathetic corpse. Vreli touches it. She says: "He has peace, at last."

Varna stares at the girl. "For once you make sense, Vreli. I wish I knew what is helping you. Nothing helps the others!"

Varna glances at Lurel. "More guards?"

Ford sighs sadly.

"Listen, I can tell you don't mean what you say. Calm down. You're only upsetting yourself. N-now let's get this... grave... dug."

He swallows awkwardly and continues on to the stream.
