Lurel looks up.

"Yes, I suppose we should."

He glances at the others - what are they thinking of him, now that they saw him carried away by bloodlust? And finally he notices Ford's distress, and Lisette's injury.

'I've led them into this. Now I need to help them, even if I can't do much.'

He walks over to Lisette.

"I'm not very good at treating wounds, but I'll do what I can," he says. "You know more about first aid than any of us - let me know what you need... bandages, water... and I'll get them for you."

He turns to Midge, and forces a grin. "I don't know what we'd do without you and that spoon - we'd have walked right into their trap."

To the princess, he says: "If it hadn't been for your attack that turned the tables on our attackers I don't know if we could have lasted much longer. I was not prepared for such an attack, and I should have been."

Last he turns to Ford.

"You didn't have a choice," he says sympathetically. "We tried to drive them off, but that one just kept attacking - he had every chance to flee." After a pause, he adds quietly: "That still doesn't make it any easier, does it?"

As Lisette drinks, she hears a voice in her head.

"You need instructions to activate the switches before you reach the control panel. You need to activate the control panel to exit from the maze. There are forty junctions and some twenty three blind passages of which this is one. There are no hidden or illusory walls or doors. Not every passage is safe. Good luck."

OOC> Lisette of course will have passed the clue to you. But it was a while ago so you may have forgotten it.

As an Avelyssian,Siffli can 'hear' the attackers movements that others would not. They are still fleeing along the passageway. But as she listens the sounds cease. Presumably they have turned a corner.

You are at a crossroads. North would take you back to where you just came from. You can barely make out the far passage wall. West will lead to where you entered the maze, though Lurel can sense a force field that would prevent you travelling that way. The path to the south continues for some way to judge from the time Siffli could hear the fleeing Avelyssians. You can see along it as far as another crossroads. The path to the east ends at a junction where you could turn north or south but not go straight on.

You update your map with the little you can add.

"N-no... not really... I just don't wanna become like-"

Ford cuts off and grabs a cloth from his backpack, wiping the blood off his sword.

"But yeah! You're probably right."

He puts his sword back in his sheath and leaves the cloth on the floor.

"So... which way?"

His sudden change of attitude seems almost forced.

Lurel hands Lisette a water bottle.

"We need to search this maze thoroughly, if we don't want to miss any clues," he says. "Let's retrace our steps to the last junction, and see where that light came from that we saw."

He scratches another mark into the floor - this time an arrow like this >- to indicate that this passage hasn't been fully explored yet.

Lisette struggles to her feet and gulps down the water in the bottle. She looks at Lurel and quietly says, "I'm sorry...I don't feel that I should be at the head of the party anymore. You go first, I'll be behind"

After saying this, she shies away from Lurel and stares down at her feet. Her cheeks crimson in embarrassment. "Sorry..." she says again but she tails off. She turns her back to the party and wipes her embarrassed tears from her eyes.

OOC> Midge has taken the lead.

Midge's spoon is neutral as he approaches the light. There is danger in the maze but not specifically here. It is yet another crossroads. The whole pattern of the maze is rectilinear and it is possible to join up some of the lines.

The light comes from weird faces painted on the walls by the junction. The same design (see attached) is repeated on all eight walls. They seem to be staring at you but apart from being a little scary they do nothing. The path to the right is parallel to the one in which you were attacked. Midge can discern a path off it to the right that should take you back to the box. The path to the left leads to another crossroads. The path in front also leads to a crossroads. There is a box in the centre of this one. The box is exactly like the one you saw before.

As Midge stares down each passage in turn he thinks the spoon glows more brightly in the direction of the box. But it could be a trick of the reflection of the glowing faces.

Lisette looked suspiciously at the faces. She was not usually emotional at all and her small outpouring of fear and embarrassment had made her angry at herself for being weak enough to allow herself to do and say such things. She limped onwards and as Midge stopped to check his spoon, she walked up to a face and touched it.

Immediately she drew her hand back from it. Perhaps she saw the light in the eyes flare brighter for a moment as she touched the face or perhaps she was seeing things. She touched it again and this time kept her hands there. The eyes this time flared quite obviously brighter. She ignored it and felt the strange face. It was cold, wait, it was hot, but it was cold again, or hot, or both, or...Lisette stepped back and looked at her hand. It was completely normal and the strange confusion of her senses disappeared. She looked up at the face again, the eyes had returned to normal but perhaps, just maybe she could see a hint of an evil grin appear on the face.

OOC: This has been a nice diversionary three days but I'll be gone again for the next week or so. When I post again, it will most likely be from merry old England. On second thoughts, I shouldn't have posted as I have because I'll probably end up missing yet another battle but don't worry about it. That's what I've posted and there'll be plenty more battles for Lisette to fight in...probably. B)

Lurel is also puzzled by the faces.

"Who are you?" he asks, softly, gazing at one of the faces.

He does not expect an answer, but stops to study each face in turn. Perhaps it is his imagination, but he has a strong feeling of being watched.
