nmcnick
Hello, everyone. I was looking into making armor, but I dont know how to make msn_dds files. I can make dds files just fine with the plugin I got, but how do you convert them to msn.dds? Any help is greatly appreciated.
Ghogiel
msn(object space normal maps) are for body only. Everything else uses tangent space normal maps. If you have the dds plugin for photoshop, got to filters>nvidia> and you can convert height to normal.

You could say like Section 1.a etc, thats just to make it easier for me to locate, and easier for you to type I guess too lol. http://i41.tinypic.com/2cgbjoy.png
Ghogiel
1: leave alone2: this is your control for how strong the normal is going to be. I think you need to tick invert Y in this thing, I cant remember what direction nvidia uses, but in the end you want +x -y. 3: leave alone4: average rgb5: OR max rgb6: Unchanged. Thanks, worked perfectly. I need to know ONE more thing though, how do I make the body on the left look like the one on the right? http://i40.tinypic.com/f3e5iq.png
Ghogiel
the one on the right is an object space normal map. You can only create these in certain 3d apps. They need the models vertex normals to calculate properly, so need the meshes geometry to make. Object space innit. I have never done this, but apparently you can make them from height maps loaded up with the low poly geo and get soemthing like that off of it. I have only ever made them by baking high to low poly models, so can't really tell you how best to go about it.

I also have the usual nVidia plug in for PS, and I'm able to generate normal maps, but not the "rainbowy" MSN maps.
throttlekitty
You'd need a high and low poly model to create a map like that. 'Baking' in this case, refers to transferring data from one model to the other (more specifically, the normals of the model). wb me.
