Windows 10 Issues

Hello all! The Steam Summer Sale is here and I'm assuming a lot of people have been supporting their favourite game developers!

During my scrounging around the marketplace I found this sweet deal on Fallout New Vegas and also Fallout 3. After downloading and installing I was met with a broken moment where the game would crash. I had watched videos, downloaded patch mods ( from here of course <3 ), installed the Windows Live program, but after every attempt I got the same result.

I know I meet the requirements and I am aware of the warning Steam made for Fallout 3 (not New Vegas) on it's store page as far as it not being Windows 10 friendly. But I've so many people play it on their system and it's left me bamboozled. If you have Fallout 3 or New Vegas on your rig, and it's playable, what's your secret? :(

Try right clicking the exe and under compatibility select Windows 7

Fallout 3 is defiantly problematic on Windows 10 as they keep changing things that causes things to break, especially on these older games that have less community support now.

Luckily many do have it running - very well - and there are a few steps but it can depend on the problem. If it starts to a simple black screen then you may find the NVAC fix will help. Alternatively a related topic about the same issue can be found here with additional workarounds.

Please note: The NVAC fix is no longer necessary for me since the Creators Update (Windows 10 Build 1703), however I have found what appear to be addressing issues with newest Nvidia drivers, but this seems to affect most full-screen games on occasion. I imagine this may be connected with Windows 10 Game Mode (which actually does optimise things quite well!).

The standard Disable Games for Windows Live is necessary as is the 1.7 patch (which I would assume comes with the Steam version?). Administrative rights and compatibility troubleshooting may also help; as may Disable DPI scaling.

Also as it is the Steam version there may be specific fixes for that, including things like making shortcuts, manually adding the game to the library... or maybe using FOSE directly once you have the ini's created.

Last things to remember trying are resetting options on your graphics card and the game, maybe trying different renderers/resolutions/aspects - especially if any kind of Intel/Optimus setup.

EDIT: One more thing that may be an issue and more so if using an ENB, is memory allocation. ENB uses a boost function to enable more/better use of memory, but you will also likely need to use an LAA enabler for the Fallout3.exe itself. In fact this is highly advisable even if just using mods of any kind.

EDIT2: Now I think of it you need to make sure you have everything DirectX9 up to date, including the SDK to be sure that everything plays nice. Furthermore I also advise updating the various .NET and C++ libraries (but try find out and stick to only the ones you need). From personal experience and as a 'last resort' you can install the Windows SDK (which is also now the only way to install the newest DirectX SDK builds).

Pain in the ass but as Microsoft bulldoze forward, older technology will need this extra care and attention to maintain full functionality of older software.

Another thing worth mentioning is that you could also return the Steam version of Fallout 3 and buy the GOG version. It's my understanding that it eliminates the compatibility related crashes that Fallout 3 has. I can't confirm this for myself, but it does seem to be a lot better than the Steam version. New Vegas can also be purchased from GOG, but I personally haven't had too much trouble with New Vegas.

Yeah the people at Gog seem to be a fair bit more on the ball with old games ...that is their business after all!

But... I guess that shouldn't then mean that the games people have already bought should not be playable ...?

Forgive me, but I'm not sure what you mean by this. Could you perhaps rephrase it?

I mean that like all the people who already bought the game should still be able to play it and not have to buy it again. So for example if the dude here cannot get a refund then that should not mean he cannot play it just cuz he bought the 'wrong' version. Otherwise that might mean I gotta buy my whole library again every 10 years or something! ;D
