Having massive CTD issues. At wits end.

I've hit a tremendous wall trying to play a modded FO4 recently. About a month ago I was playing through my Railroad Sniper character, and just gotten into the Institute. I spoke with Shaun, and proceeded to call it a night, saving and exiting in the main atrium before speaking to the branch heads. The next day, without adding or taking away anything to the game, the atrium save crashes upon loading to the desktop.

After a few minutes of repeated crashes, I tried to load my Mercer Safehouse save just before porting into CIT. (Keep in mind I use no random mercer safehouse mod, and put the safehouse on spectacle island) It loads fine, I proceed to teleport, loading screen, CTD.

What the hell?

I reload the mercer save again, and inspect the surroundings more. Everything seems fine after exploring the island. I attempt to fast travel to Sanctuary and suffer another crash.

Reload Mercer > Fast travel to nearest mainland POI > CTD

Reload > Swim to mainland > CTD

Reload > attempt fast travel to Diamond CIty market > CTD

Reload several different saves from several hours prior on same character >CTD

Load different characters spanning several different hours > CTD

Attempt new game > CTD

Reinstalled game completely on a SSD I got hand-me-downed from a friend and attempted previous tries with less mods > CTD

Wiped the saves completely and attempted new game > CTD

Wiped the ini files and redid them, even attempted some ini configs suggested by other people > CTD

It's just insanity at this point. I'm no expert at this by any means, so I've run out of things that I know to do

If anyone has any ideas of what I can do to solve this I would greatly appreciate it. In the meantime, I'm gonna rake through my mod list and try to purge what I can.

Here's some extra info for those who think it may help

The saves in question no longer exist, I'm sorry to say. After installing the game onto my new SSD I decided to start completely from scratch. Even when I still had them, I went thru dozens of saves spanning hours into the past, even going so far back as Concord and even back to the vault with no avail.

Not in the last few months that I have seen.

*Edit*

Last update I had was back on the 13th which was two days before my Institute incursion. I created an initial thread on the problem on the 15th and did my SSD reinstall on the 30th.

That did the trick. I was able to load up into a new game. Maybe it's something to do with FO4 SE? Or would this be just the ini files?

*edit* I downloaded the most recent FO4SE and the crashes happen again.

To the OP :

Let me tell you a bit of my own experience with this game and the available mods : I've started Fallout 4 perhaps 4 times already ( from scratch ) because CTD's and inconsistent while playing the game.

The previous time ( one week ago ), I had 118 mods installed; out of those, I had 27 in textures ( GraFix, FlaconOil's, HD Textures in 4k and other major texture mods ) and on the top of those, the last that I installed was WOTC ( War of the Commonwealth ) which came to over stress my rig to the point that I could not continue playing so I had to go nuke and re-start a new game from scratch.

After making my own investigation, observing results and reading, I decided JUST TO install ONE major texture mod and among all available, I decided to go with FLACONOIL's. My CTD's continued so I decided to go nuke again and re-start another game from scratch.

This time, I decided NOT TO INSTALL ANY texture mod at all and make a big change in my Nvidia GeForce 1070 video game settings : I decided to change from TAA ( best quality ) to Off ( Best performance ), god rays off and the rest in ULTRA settings ( my resolution is at : 2560x1440 ). Just a bit of information : TAA is antialiasing, meaning, it will smooth whatever is smooth and increase sharpness whatever is sharp ... but ... honestly and even though that is what my Nvidia Experience recommended me to optimize my game, I decided, to try OFF ( Best performance).

When you choose OFF, there is not filter ( same principle that apply to photographic camera sensor - without the antialiasing filter, the photos are sharper ) and your graphics will look crispy and sharp ... that btw, for some people, it may be TOO CRISPY and SHARP but not for me. To be honest, I DO NOT NEED any texture mod anymore because my graphics looks super sharp and much better that when I had all the texture mods available in Nexus.

I started a new game just a couple of days ago and I only installed 85 mods and those mods are related to building houses, scrapping and weapons. I also have Caliente, CBBE pubic hair, immersive lovers and another related to nudity. I also installed the Body Slide. To make my story short, my game is not crashing anymore; I am running 60 fps almost every time and in the city, obviously goes down a bit but that is not a problem because it is expected. The major issue that we can experience are CTD's and so far so good, I do not have any.

I do not want to advise anybody not to install texture mods. You have the right to play your game and install whatever mod you want and play it the way you want it, but based on my own experience, the texture mods are doing more damage than not. At this point, I could even avoid AWKCR, Weaponsmith Extended, Extended Weapons, etc and still be able to use my preferred weapons : Minigun Vindicator ( standalone ), AS Vektor, AN94, PTRS-41 and M4A1. All of these weapons can be installed standalone and I would not need any xtra mod to enhance these weapons more than I can do using console commands. Yes. With console commands, all these weapons are explosives in my game so I do not need any special ammo or whatever ... my point is that the game is playable and runs much smoother with less mods installed.

Fallout 4 has good graphics already, not as good as The Witcher ( that game is superb from graphic standpoint and you do not need any mod to enhance it ) though, but still has good graphics that can be improved if you have a good video card and switch to OFF instead using FXAA or TAA. I am not saying that I will not have any CTD, probably I will at some point during my actual run, but I can assure you that I will have much much less than before when I had all those mods installed in my rig. BTW, my rig is :

- Nvidia GeForce 1070 8gb

- 16 gb RAM

- i7

- SSD 1tb

I do have a very good video card but still cannot keep up if I install texture mods that as I said, are not necessary IMHO .. at least, not for me and let me tell you, I love sharpness ( I am a photographer ) and for me, a game graphic must be excellent ( like the Witcher ) but after too many problems, I decided ( as I said ) to play without texture mods and leave my video card to handle everything and so far, I do not have any CTD.

I did not even installed True Storms, Vivid Landscapes, Better roads, WET, etc ... I decided to drastically reduce my textures and not to stress my video card that much so I could play my game smoothly and nice. Yes, for the majority of players, would be unacceptable to avoid True Storms, etc, etc, etc, .... as I said, anybody can play his/her game in the way you want it. I do have storms ( from the game itself ), I do not care about how the water looks since I do not walk, run or fight on water and my entire game looks much better ( from sharpness standpoint ) that If I install all those textures mods and Vivid Landscape.

I see in your load order, Mama's Murphy chair mod ... do you really need that mod ? I never needed it. You have one mod right there that you could avoid and help your rig. I do not really care about freaking mama's murphy chair and how sharp it is but again, if you want it, go for .. but it is one mod that IMHO, is not necessary .. it will not make your game be much better. What makes your game better is to have some mods that won't over stress your rig so it will be enhanced enough but not overwhelming and to play it as smooth as you can.

I do not know what your rig is, but if you have a decent video card, do yourself a favor : restart a new game, do not install anything that it is not necessary and change from FXAA or TAA to OFF ( god rays off as well ) and see what happens. It is working for me and I am not lying when I said that my graphics now looks much better that when I had all those texture mods installed.

Happy gaming.

Thanks for the input Sopmac I do appreciate it. My rig is not as good as yours but it does (well, did) the job.

- Nvidia GeForce GTX 1070 8gb

- 8 gb ram

- i5

- 256 gb SSD

The mama murphy chair was actually the remodel to look like the one featured in concept art and was something I wanted to try out. My load order before all this was more on the ludicrous side of things. I was always hovering around 240+ mods until now where I'm at 200 or so. I will keep what you said in mind and scour my texture mods further.

Happy to help ... you do have a good video card but not that much of RAM or space in your SSD so you should watch closely what exactly you really need to play your game. I forgot to mention that I did not download the Bethesda texture package this time ( did it before because I thought that in combination with all the textures mods I had, it will look superb but I was wrong ) so, what I got is the main game + all the DLC and again, my mods are related to building, weapons, women and power armor ( Worsin paint and the other related to jetpacks ) ....

.... I do respect what the texture mod's author have done and it is their fault if one or some, crash your game. They are free and we welcome their support and favor but it is our computer who should be really good enough to handle all those mods so we need to be careful.

Also, I am waiting for WOTC ( War of the commonwealth ) update that the author is doing to install it again. It will be ready in two - three weeks from today ( I hope ). That's why I decided not to install any texture mod and give priority to WOTC because I know it will consume memory and my fps will suffer. I am planning not to play it on Mama's Murphy so I need my rig not to be so stressed with other mods that I do not really need and have room for this one.

Happy gaming bro.
