Long term Skyrim fanboy here who picked up FO4 in the Summer Sale. Just asking the community if there are any mods seen as absolutely essential that I should add before I get my teeth stuck into the game.

Thanks

None ... and ultimately that will depend on what you want. I do not think that anybody can tell you what is or not essential to your game.

I've had too many CTD's by installing a lot a mods and especially, texture/graphic mods so I decided not to install any of those and use only my Nvidia GeForce 1070 setup to ultra settings with anti-aliasing OFF ( and god rays off ) to handle my game and so far so good.

From 118 mods that I used to have, now I've only 85 and none of them are texture mods. All of them are related to building ( scrap everything, homemaker, place anywhere, etc ), weapons, power armor ( painting, jetpacks and clear HUD ) and about 4-5 related to body / companion ( caliente, body slide, immersive lovers embrace, CBBE pubic hair, etc ).

... and my game now looks so sharp and crispy than when I had all major texture mods installed ( GraFix, HD textures in 4k, FlaconOil's, etc ). As you can see, for me it is important to have mods that allow me to build my house anywhere and in anyway I want it.

In relation to weapons, there are some mods that allow you to have more calibers, switch ammo, etc, but I could get rid of those and still have in my inventory what I want. For example, my preferable weapons are : Vindicator ( and this is standalone mod ), the AS Vektor ( also standalone ), the AN94 ( standalone ), the PTRS-41 ( standalone ) and the M4A1 ( also standalone ) and even without those mods like Weaponsmith Extended, Extended weapons, etc, I would be able not just to have them but to enhance them via console commands. All my weapons are explosives for example so, I do not really need all those mods to enhance my ammo and weapons.

What I am trying to say is that beside nothing is essential unless you want it to be, this game is playable even without mods and the graphic/textures are going to look very good ( not as good as The Witcher ) and the performance of the game will be much better. Mods are good but too many installed in your rig are going to contribute to CTD's and this is something that I am trying to avoid at all cost. So, for me, in order to avoid that, whatever was "essential" before, it is not today.

Avoiding CTD's is essential for me now on the top of everything else and unfortunately, the only way to avoid that is not to get crazy about installing tons of mods which again, will definitely contribute to that.

Believe it or not, I re-installed the game from scratch 3 days ago and I decided not even to install : True Storms, Vivid Weathers, FAR, WET, Better roads, Grassland ( a little bit of green ), etc, etc, etc ... yes ... WOW ... but ... I still have storms ( provided by the game itself ) and it is much better this way because before when I had True Storms, I had to use the holotape to turn it off constantly .. now, I cannot so it is more immersive because I need to wait for the storm to go away by itself ( by the game engine ); Vivid Weaters ( landscape, rock and trees ) is not necessary for me since now, my game looks so sharp and crispy and even much better than before when I had that mod; WET is not essential to me because to be honest, I do not walk, run or fight on water ... so I don't care how water looks like ( I am not a fish ... lol ... ); a bit of green is not essential to me as well since I like to see that I woke up in a world destroyed by a nuclear holocaust where grass is not green anymore.

Happy gaming

if you never played the game, start stock then, it give you a impression how the game looks/works, then after finishing the game, you should now wat you wana add and or see changed

never start a game you never played with any mod, if you do you never know how the stock game works/looks/act

also never ask any 1 wat to add all will tell you difrent things, and there is no essential mod, till you know wat you wana change

I'd recommend you play without mods for awhile before you start adding changes to the game. That may happen quite soon (I played Skryim vanilla for about twenty hours before I couldn't take straight vanilla anymore and started adding mods, but FO3 I played vanilla happily for much longer).

Also, once you play the game in vanilla you'll know what you want to change and can go look for the mods that do those things. I don't find a single mod listed above essential to my game. Everyone's tastes, needs and wants are different.

Imo, the only mods I count as essential are

Looksmenu

CBBE

Bodyslide manager

(useful, if you're planning a female character)

Looksmenu Customization Compendium

UFO4P (Unofficial FO4 patch)

No mod is essential, except perhaps, the unofficial patch. Play the game without any mods, as others have suggested, and then you can tell what is lacking for YOUR playstyle and look for mods that fill these voids.
