Help with basic faces?

I’m returning to Oblivion after some years and have decided my character will be a female Nord. I have spent quite a while trying without much success to convert the gargoyle you start with into a recognizable Nordic woman and I have despaired of success. In all the years this game has existed, has anyone ever published suggestions as to how to use the unmodded creator screens to produce human beings that are not deformed? I know there are all sorts of mods, but I am not looking for a "mystic elf" or an anime Lolita or similar improbable adventurers--I just want a young woman who does not make me wince when I look at her face! Can this be done, or should I make up my mind to download some mod?

It is incredible that, with all the time Bethesda spent making this fine game, they could not see that the character creation process was so flawed. How could they go to all the trouble making so complicated and confusing a set of sliders without seeing that the basic faces were so appallingly bad? (But perhaps I just lack the skill to turn gargoyles into people?)

Oblivion was released 10+ years ago, in fact the extent of its character generator was a novel feature for video games at the time.

But to answer your question, the first step is to not use the in-game generator for editing faces. Instead, use the NPC screens in the CS to edit your characters. They contain many more sliders, and most sliders cover a wider range of values. Another trick is to find/install a utility that can transfer face data between Oblivion installations. So when you see a face you like, you can simply transfer it into your game and use it as a basis for your own changes.

My opinion of third-party texture/mesh replacements for Oblivion faces is the same as replacements for landscape and other environment mods, imo it's very close to impossible to both visually improve Oblivion and retain all of the developer's original intent. In 10+ years of trying them, I can count on one hand the number of texture mods that managed to do both.

Also, Wrye Bash offers the functionality for transferring a character's face from one savegame to another. So in theory you could also place one of those starter ones to your saves folder, open Wrye Bash and transfer the face data from one of those starter faces to your existing savegame, assuming the race and gender match, and you have any mods installed that the existing one also has. It might actually work. For example I spent quite some time editing the face of my character on one savegame, and now that the face is done, I pick a male Khajiit as the charcter whenever starting a new game and then transfer the face from "face storage savegame" using Wrye Bash to the current savegame.

Edit: Oh wait, oops, the description of the mod already mentions that.
