Galacticat42
Uhm his provider checks the files he downloads and you people act as if this is the most normal thing ever? You live in Northern Korea or did i miss something? "the thing they are notifying me about I didn't download." sounds more like a spam/fishing mail...Phishing... And yea and it doesn't exactly sound completely legitimate, the message that is. A few things to note:Did the message have an external link?Did the message ask for any type of verification?Did the message have an attachment?Did the message take but a few extra milliseconds to open than usual? If yes to any of the above I'd be highly suspicious of phishing, keylogging, and/or spyware, viruses or trojans. If no to all of the questions then WTF is your internet provider doing going about and looking at your private data? That is unless you don't live in the USA at all. ghosu
Well i'm not talking 'bout privacy, of course everything is tracked and saved and may backstab you in the future but a provider that contacts you directly after a download would be something new to me, it's 1983 not 1984 yet  Edited February 24, 2012 by ghosu
Dan3345
You guys should look up TOR.. I don't pirate, and I am not that into the dirtier things on the web, but TOR makes me feel relatively safe. Even if it is all imaginary..

It's pretty standard practice (in the US) for the ISP to send a notification to the customer on record that a copyright violation has been reported using an IP assigned to them at the time. BigKevSexyMan
Hmmmm....It might not be your ISP directly. I once got a notice from a 3rd party through my ISP. Here's what happened, I was torrenting something and I guess someone was watching the list of peers and whatnot. Anyways, they got my IP address and contacted my ISP. Everything basically blew over though, so no harm. I stopped using torents after that though.

I don't pirate, and I am not that into the dirtier things on the web, but TOR makes me feel relatively safe. Even if it is all imaginary.. Tor is not used for torrents.. It's because it's too much bandwidth for the tor network. There's a tor addon for Vuze I believe but it's not worth using. I'm doing a research project on Tor this summer
