The Slow Strafe

I'm having an... interesting problem with Oblivion. It only happens occasionally, but when I enter a new cell, my PC starts a slow strafe to the right. I can move other directions, but at the same snail pace and when I stop moving, I proceed to strafe to the right again. When this happens I have to etd and restart and it usually fixes it. Lately though, it's been happening when I load up a save game. Just curious if anyone else has encountered it and if there are any fixes for it.

Seems you have joystick or joypad attached to your computer.

Thanks nosisab, I'll give it a try as soon as I'm able.

I'm curious for the OP to tell us if that was the case or not. You'd think he would have realized and checked if it were so simple! I hope it's nothing more complicated, though. Sounds like a big pain in the arse.

I haven't replied because I haven't checked it yet. There was no response by the time I had to leave for work yesterday...

This is one of those things that are so obvious we don't even think then at first. Once, very long time ago, I was called from home to attend the operators having trouble to boot up the old 4341 IBM mainframe.

The console message was absurdly clear: Disk is read only ... But doesn't occurred to anyone the housekeeper woman turning the key (yes a big physical key protected only for being placed at a bas-relief hole) meant to turn it RW/RO. Seems a practical joke but happened indeed.

To better understanding, those disks although having less storage capacity than the most modern HDs were as big as a bar freezer.

PS: if anyone, just for curiosity, want to see 'the thing' The afore mentioned disks were exactly the same as the ones at left here, the key can be seem at the righter one.

Haha! I want games to come on cassette tapes again. :)

I still don't understand how zeroes and ones can transmit data, especially something like sound (I don't understand recording at all), or how zeroes and ones can be "burned" onto a DVD. Or microchips, for that matter. There are so many things about technology I don't understand.

As far as the original post, if there's a joystick connected to the PC, that's definitely going to end up being the problem. But if there is no control pad or joystick connected, then we have a real problem!

Really, Even I can't avoid a smile when looking back those computer granddads, but even this 'venerando' 4341 is modern compared with things like punch cards, and you can believe me... worse things. :)

Now, if the issue here is not some joysomething I'll be really surprised.

If it's not a joysomething, I'd say he might be screwed!

I actually am too young to have ever had a cassette tape computer, but I'll tell you, it would have been kind of fun. Those were the supreme gaming machines of their day, and I missed out on a lot of stuff. The most "antiquated" I used were some old two-color apple computers. Our public library had one, and I brought in these 5 1/4 based floppy disk games. :)

My first computer was ... gosh... an 088? DOS computer. And then I upgraded to a 286. I remember that very clearly. It had a 256 color 320x200 resolution VGA graphics card!! And it was already old (and a rip off) when I bought it. Tried to install a Sound Blaster in that thing and about cried. All those IRQ conflicts and things... It was really too much for me to handle at age 10 or so. But some of those old games (thinking LucasFilm/LucasArts in particular) had such damn awesome soundtracks, they still sounded great on the obnoxious, loud PC speaker (the volume of which could be altered only by using a screw driver if I remember correctly, thus it just stayed loud as hell).

Why do I feel so nostalgic? I was really a console gamer mostly. The SNES, still the best system ever, though I enjoyed an NES and an Atari 2600 before that.

Anyway. Rambling.

It seems that my 360 gamepad was causing the strafing issue. Since I've unplugged it I haven't had any problems. Thanks again for the help. I feel kind of stupid as it was so simple, and I'm sure, often overlooked.
