Guitar or Drums

Which is harder, guitar or drums? In my opinion it's guitar, what do you think?

I would have to say guitar, but that's probably only because I play it. :P

I'm sure drums are equally hard to play.

Hard to say. Once you delve deeply into any musical medium it's bound to get complex. Percussion appears easy though most people are ignorant of the work that goes into it: metric modulation, intervals, etc.

Playing a guitar however, usually requires more initial training, since you must learn a host of new physical techniques, scales, progressions, etc before you can improvise something better than "Mary Had A Little Lamb".

So I'd go with guitar.

Well..

I play drums and I tried to learn to play guitar. I think guitar is more complicated to learn (and due to laziness and really small hands I can do no more than play power cords) but not harder. Making different body parts do different things at the same time is a talent some never learn. So I pick drums on that basis.

i play guitar, but i say drums are quite a bit harder. like lisnpuppy said, it takes a lot more training to get your body parts to all do different things at the same time. (lol dont take that the wrong way)

In my opinion (as a guitar player) I think that drums are most difficult to play than guitar. Personally, I cannot play too many time the drums, I get tired five or six minutes later, probably because I am a weak lady

The question is really which one scales up better as you take on things of a higher difficulty.

<film snipped to save space.

Find me a drummer equivalent of that. Then, we'll have a debate here.

Not a debate, because my musical talent stops at a comb and paper, but if you ever want to check out some good drumming, about 6 minutes into the hippie dope smoking song "Inna Godda Da Vidda" there's about a 2.5 minute drum solo before the keys kick in.

Many people (older ones), feel Ginger Baker of Cream is/was the best drummer. For years running, in Playboy's musical poll, he won each time. You may want to take a look when you have some spare time.

BTW: What's the name of the group in the film ? Enjoyed his playing and want to look into it.

Never hurts to explore different musical avenues.

Well I've been playing guitar for more than 15 years and I tried drums too, IMHO playing drums is harder cause you need to divide your body into 4 different parts, with each feet doing something different and arms doing something different, and keep the beat stable so your band doesnt speed up or slow down...

The key part is that you need to have a good musical ear, you need to keep track of the song you re playing...

To listen to a good drummer try Nick Menza of Megadeth(Ex drummer), Mike Pornoy of Dream Theater, Nicko McBrain of Iron Maiden, Behemoth's drummer (dont know his name but never heard anyone use kicks like that :D) and of course Dave Lombardo :D if you listen to Slayer's Angel of Death, you will see what I mean...

So being a drummer is never easy, especially the drums are the backbone of the music :D
