Who is the BEST companion

I didn't really like Gage that much, they basically made him a combination of MacCready and Cait. More evil than MacCready, but not as soft as Cait. He's not that good unless you plan on just rp'ing a raider, because unlike the other companions he doesn't really offer much in the way of dialogue outside of Nuka world. You're not going to get the various locational and sidequest dialogue in the commonwealth from him that you do with the vanilla companions.

I've got him at the moment and he's rather dull. Combat is fine but story and personality not so much. Plus what sort of raider hates chems? But, these days I don't change my character's style to avoid upsetting followers. If they don't like it they know where the nearest settlement is :)

Edit: Forgot to add my preferred companion, the better one IMO, is Danse. A gatling laser with a decent legendary effect (eg. wounding, explosive) and I don't need to do anything. Story is alright, probably one of the best scenes in the game, IMO.

Each companion has their good and bad things I don't think there's one that is just all round awesome. I don't use modded ones, still looking for a male companion that's as well done as the female ones.

Until then, or I make my own, I'll either use an automatron (no personality or opinions) or the one from the faction I sided with :)

No love for Ada? Beast of a companion - none judgmental and wrecks everything in sight once she's tricked out.

ADA - or any robot - would be a great companion if not for her absurd habit of a) getting in your way when you are trying to shoot an enemy and b) running full pelt into you when you are trying to build something, accompanied by that dreaded "tsh tonk" of her feet. Plus unending comments about you picking up or dropping junk, the single most common reason for me dismissing companions. If I could swear at her in the game she would learn a lot of new words.

Cant stand cait or mcready,or danse dogmeat gets in the way & whines, nick v's voice irritates, ditto curie, ada is good once you change her legs to a mr handy thing, codsworth is good but his comments grate after a while. Gage I like , esp as he doesent do all that sickly sweet romance comments crap and Longfellow is ok with better guns.

Almost forgot preston, hes ok until he starts telling you he's suicidal so no ty

I've been playing lone wanderer numerous times for single reason following mod remedies

https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/21271/?

after a while ada made me want to shoot her, but that was before the mod worked it's magic

I thought Cait would be fun, she's not, and not as hot as her narcistic comments would suggests

I thought strong would be fun, but he is rather annoying

at this point I even didn't try Hancock or Longfellow

other loosers were no go form first word came from their mouth

and then Gaige showed up with Nuka World, I did full Nuka playthrough with him onboard and...

yeah I like him, first solid follower, unless Hancock is also on the level I maybe try him out someday

For me, it's Heather Casdin, Audrey and R4-04. The latter 2 are from the Tales of the Commonwealth mod - aside from top notch game commentary, their interaction with the player during some of the (superbly written) quests is so incredible it's almost hard to believe it's from a mod.

Kevkiev nails it with that observation. Companions that go beyond the vanilla are the most enjoyable.

exactly, tales from the commonwealth content is almost better than the vanilla companions or quests. the companiom dialogue is by far the best in the game, you didn't mention birdie though, his quest is pretty great, as well as his weird banter

Yeah, I mean, I like Birdie. His dialogue is great, and it gives him some real personality. (I guess that, in a nutshell, it's "personality" that really draws me to the companions from Tales from the Commonwealth.) But, since I don't have Nuka World or Automatron, I can't run the mod's DLC patch so I don't get Birdie's quest. Maybe doing the quest would put him in my "favourites" category along with Audrey and R4-04 (and Heather). Actually, that reason and getting DLC-aware dialogue for Audrey and R4 are 2 big pushes for me to get those DLCs.

I like Ada. She's always so supportive, and murderizes everyone fast, if you build her right. Basically try:

A) sentry factory head, reaper helm, two miniguns, assaultron legs if you can stand the constant *KLUNKA* *KLUNKA* *KLUNKA* or handy thruster if not, voltaic armour everywhere you can. Now the thing is... each voltaic armour piece counts as a separate hit for each bullet, with its own chance to proc the helm proc. It's like she's the Queen Of Hearts: OFF WITH HIS HEAD! Even short bursts behead a mutant.

It's like an escort mission, with me being the escorted guy.

B) what I call the turbosquid configuration: sheer range and firepower, not depending on procs. Mr Handy body, thruster, 3 thruster arms with buzzsaws for when cornered, 2 sentry arms with gatling lasers, voltaic armour everywhere you can. DON'T put ranged weapons on the thruster arms too, because it can only shoot one or the other at the same time, so it actually reduces dps. The Mr Handy body has the accuracy and range modifier that normally you'd get on a head (the eye says it has it, but it really doesn't) and it's the highest in the game, equal to the Robobrain head.

I call it a turbosquid because, well, it has 5 arms and a jet engine

for me at this point... the best companion is anybody but deacon. i had my head explode when deacon shot me in the back of the head with a silenced .50 sniper rifle that i made for him. once was enough.

i suppose i don't really have a specific preference...

Codworth: Best Survival companion imho. He doesn't need to be stimpak'd so I can just run off and leave him when things get overwhelmingly dangerous and he will just turn up again. He doesn't head back home like the others.

Deacon: Recently I started my very first Railroad play through and found Deacon. At first I thought he was just a bit 'weird', but he has been really entertaining and really makes traveling a lot more fun and lighthearted. But he gets right in my line of fire constantly.

Paladin Danse: I just had him as companion as I played the Brotherhood in my last play through. That is one 'deep' dude. It took forever to romance him and by the time I got there I didn't want to do it after all. The way he rejects you when you fail at 'flirting'....too harsh ...waaay too harsh.

Nick: He was my companion on my first play through. He is good and has an interesting story.

Curie: My least favorite. She is boring.

Still got to try MacCready and the rest, trying to avoid any info on them in the meantime.
