What would be your ideal RPG?

So I see this topic crop up on RPG Codex quite a bit. Over there, they like their games turn based and tough as nails, preferably 6 to a party, Western style, and a 'blobber' (so-called because the entire party is moved as if it were a blob and you never see the characters). They also like puzzles, meaningful choices and consequences, hate quest maps, and prefer challenge over pretty graphics. Then the whole thing degenerates into a troll fight over which game did it best :P

 

Without the troll fighting, let's discuss what our ideal RPG is. Mine includes the following:

 

Meaningful choices and consequences. If I blow up the old lady's house, then her grandson should have something to say about it! Bare minimum.

Decent combat--not too hard, which would make my carpal tunnel flare, but not too easy, which will bore me

Sandbox. I dislike JRPGs mostly because of the linearity and the 'But Thou Must!' trope they contain.

Make me think. Don't dumb it down. If I have to find some hints online now and then, I'm not going to die :P

Put work into the character and creature graphics, not just the pretty scenery. Oblivion, I am looking at YOU :P

Multiple endings. Real ones. Not just trumped up for the press pre-release....Todd.

A decent plot. Plot it like you're writing a novel. Holes and the like do get noticed.

Modding options! Since the devs can't think of everything, this makes it even better.

Just adding on,

 

Character customization (classes, races, gender, appearances etc) - as much details as possible. Extra points for cool factor and/or something unique.

 

Companions and customization - variety, story and interaction must be included. Extra points for details, creativity, romance and banter.

 

Personal stronghold - in the form of player houses, castles, estates, kingdom etc. Extra points for customization, functionality and aesthetics.

 

Itemization - large variety, comprehensive and customizable, must include crafting and quests. Extra points for lore, creativity and extend of customization.

 

Environment - aesthetics and scale. Extra points for unique explorations, eg underwater, alien or celestial environments, something uncommon

I agree with most of the points made here.... I am more into the first person, real time, sandbox flavor game though.

 

Results of actions should be based on character skills, not player skills. Combat, Spell Casting, lockpicking, etc. (no minigames thankyouverymuch.)

 

Character development should make sense.... (I liked the morrowind system fairly well.)

 

NO hand holding. I DON'T want a quest compass. I DO want a comprehensive journal. Give me directions, mark it on my map, whatever, don't give me a big arrow pointing the way.

 

Actions should have consequences. (as stated above.)

well, each game has it own speciality

 

but what RPG game doesn't think is fighting stance, if only they add this, the RPG game will be awesomer than ever

 

like samurai or medieval knight stance. :D

Forgot to add, good GUI is quite important but not many developers have done well in this aspect, except Squaresoft who are one of the experts in this area. Edited by sendo75

A character set for you, someone with a background history, so the game is more in depth rather than create a character who has no background and basicly popped up from a log.

 

A game that takes place in a real life time long ago, like 1700's or 1800's, when guns were first being sent into production and swords were still being used.

 

Cinamatic scenes, not just "oh earthquake" it's "EARTHQUAKE, GET YOU'RE HEADS DOWN AND RUN FOR COVER!!" and it follows the character as he runs to cover, or you get to be you're character running for cover.

 

Main quests and side quests, so there's plenty to do.

 

HUGE worldspace.

 

Free roaming.

 

Seasons and wild life, with an active econemy.

 

Wait, I just practicly laid out AC3. Lol. And that wasn't on purpose.
