Some questions about Skyrim SE

I want to get back into Skryim again but I have been thinking if I should play Skyrim or Skyrim SE. I have heard a lot of "hate" about SE and that nothing is really improved etc, but when I booted it up I really felt like there was a big improvement, it just felt more "responsive" and smooth in everything, and I could swear that the distance terrain and mountains looked even better in SE than in a modded Skryim (with a lot less flicker) like with more clouds around the mountains and easier to spot things in the distance etc. Not sure if I am imagining things though? I will mod SE though also to get it looking even better, espcially with textures. Any thoughts on this?

A bit worried though with some things like Creation Kit, will every update that is released for the Creation Kit break SKSE?

Also do mods in Skryim SE disable achievements like in Fallout 4?

Also I remeber last time I looked into Skryim SE there was not much options for ENB:s. Has that improved since then?

Lastly if one wants to get as good graphics as possible, is the STEP guide the way to go, or are there other sources?

Visually, it does have some improvements. Still needs a colour overhaul to deal with the whole 'everything is grey' issue, but I've found that texture and weather mods do a lot to fix that - when the weather mods aren't making the game too blindingly bright anyway - and ENBs aren't quite as necessary. Some even have SSAO-type features.

The main thing about SSE is that it's a lot more stable than Skyrim.

"A bit worried though with some things like Creation Kit, will every update that is released for the Creation Kit break SKSE?"

I think you mean 'Creation Club'. Currently I think it's 'unknown'. It's possible there wont really be any updates as the CC access/information stuff has already been applied.

"Also do mods in Skryim SE disable achievements like in Fallout 4?"

Yep, but also like FO4, there's a mod for that.

"Also I remeber last time I looked into Skryim SE there was not much options for ENB:s. Has that improved since then?"

Not really. They seem to mostly focus on sharpening, contrast and myopia-simulation. ENB for SSE isn't very well developed, and apparently it may not improve. But, see my note above.

"Lastly if one wants to get as good graphics as possible, is the STEP guide the way to go, or are there other sources?"

Can't help you there as I've never used STEP. I've always found 'picking what you like the look of and reading the mod descriptions to see how to make everything work' is the best method. But then, content mods have always been more important to me than just visuals. You just do what works for you.

Thank you!

About "ENB for SSE isn't very well developed, and apparently it may not improve." why is this? Why is the ENB:s not as good for SSE as regular Skryim, and why is it possible they might not improve?

I think ENB is the single most important thing to make Skryim look as good as it can do, and without it I doubt that SSE would ever look as good?

Also is the SKSE out yet for SSE?

"Why are the ENBs not as good for SSE as regular Skyrim, and why is it possible they might not improve?"

Apparently the engine is harder to work with, so many of the features will be difficult, if not impossible, to implement. But, some of the features of ENB are included in vanilla Skyrim (i.e. DoF/myopia-simulation, colour boost, etc.) while others are included in some of the weather mods (which aren't as heavy on the system as ENBs are), or even ReShade presets.

It's been available for a while now.

Ah thank you.

Do you know if people are migrating over to SE? Do you think there will be a slow shift over to SE over time so that it might take over the modding scene from regular?

Also, is it possible to use some mods from regular Skryim on SE? For example texture and mesh mods etc? There seems to be some compatibility between regular and SE?

Fore example on the S.T.E.P site for the SE edition there are many mods that now have the status :"Currently not ported. Unknown if it works with SSE. No word from the author."

Anecdotally, I think a lot of people are moving to SE. Some won't due to the amount of time they've invested into getting their LE game 'just right' in terms of the mods they're using. I think there will always be an active modding community for both but eventually SE will become the dominant one.

You can use some LE mods in SE but usually you have to open the mod up in the (SE) Creation Kit and then save it before you install it. Some aren't that simple to port.

You can port LE mods over to SE for your own personal use by using the technique above for the simpler mods.

Lastly, I recommend using STEP in order to get a solid, stable base game established before adding on your mods of preference - but it only covers LE at the moment.

Hmm yes. I am actually leaning toward recreating my mod list for my main character and playing him in LE as I left off and then if i create any new characters I will do them on SE. I assume there is no problem with having both LE and SE installed on the same computer and in Nexus?

I have both installed and have no problem.

Just coming back to your earlier questions - you'll find SE doesn't suffer from z-fighting, which can be very annoying in LE. So that's a great improvement. Also, you can approximate pretty closely the effect of an ENB in SE using different methods, although some screen archers might want to roast my eyeballs for suggesting that. :)

Lastly, because SE doesn't suffer from the same memory limitations as LE you can potentially have many more actors inhabiting the same area in-game meaning that simulating events like large scale civil war battles is much more feasible. Carnage!

The only issues I'm having in LE is "water z-fighting". Or what looks to me like water LOD showing up on top of the actual water mesh. I can't recall the last time the game has actually crashed and I play on a laptop. SE is fine but it's not perfect, there are bugs not even the UOP can fix. Gain 10 levels in a row for example and watch the music play 10 times unless you quit the game and come back - probably the most annoying bug SE has.

This is actually something I really noticed when I booted up the SE edition. Somehow the distant mountains looks so great in SE and it could be that I am so used to z fighting in my modded Oldrim. So that is a huge +. I am just finding it hard to know what textures and graphics enhancement to install on SE to get it looking as good across the board as Oldrim. I would love if S.T.E.P was fully supported in SE but it seems there are a lot of things missing still. Though I guess things are ramping up now on the modding side for SE?

Some mods I found for Oldrim also that is almost a must for me is the real first person where you can see your body and the camera is actually placed on your head for a much more realistic moment, it no longer feels like you are floating around on rails. Add another mod to this that lets you freely adjust your height of you character and you can play a huge barbarian character that actually is so tall that you tower over people and look down on them which is very cool (or look up if you are playing a tiny elf) I really hope some of these can be ported to SE.

Also I loved to play the game with the Summer Skyrim mod that made everything look like summer with green grass etc instead of the bleak vanilla. It really made my game double as pretty, though the pictures in the mod and video look awful because of the enb the modder is using: https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/22300/?

Would it be possible for someone to port that over to Skyrim SE you think?

Hmm that sounds wierd, is there any video of this? How is your overal experience with SE vs oldrim?
