CTD's on save leading to inability to load files, and 100+ hours wasted

My game will randomly begin to crash at random hours into my playthrough. Now it crashes when trying to load the save. I've made a Smash Patch, tried cleaning saves, tried literally every single thing I can find to try and do and I have come up empty handed, pissed, and ready to delete every Bethesda product off my computer.

 

 

3 separate characters cause I had to keep starting over, and I'm getting beyond pissed. Wasted 3-400+ hours probably the last month on this, and now after typing up an ENTIRE FORUM POSTING THAT COVERED EVERY SINGLE LITTLE DETAIL NEXUS FORUMS DECIDED TO HAVE A "CONNECTION ISSUE" AND WIPED THE WHOLE DAMN THING.

 

So easy to say I am furious, and I'm sorry. I shouldn't post when angry, just.... why. Why does this s#*! happen and have no clear indication what caused it, and how to fix it. I practically watched every video on the Gamer Poets YT channel today and when making a Smash Patch, it ended up making my game crash when entering the main menu, till I disabled it. Sorry if there isn't enough information here, let me know if there is anything else I can post, but right now all I can do is try my best not to take a hammer to my pc.

 

Basically, I'm done modding if I can't figure this out.

If it's anything like a BASHED patch from Wrye Bash, then it should be loaded dead last with only a few exceptions - Dual Sheath Redux, FNIS, any ENB, and a couple other mods are the only ones that should be loaded AFTER any patch file from a program like Wrye Bash. It clearly states on the description pages for these mods where they should be loaded.

Anyway, as you can see by my failed attempts at responding, I have to respond, then EDIT my blank post cause Nexus forums just hates me.

But yeah, its basically like a new Bashed patch afaik. Saw a video on Gamer Poets channel about it, and its much more non-hardcore modder friendly.
Anyway, sorry for all the commotion and all that, I just don't know what is wrong or how to find out what is wrong with my game so I think I'm gonna distance myself from SSE. That being said, modding Oldrim is eons harder and I've been downloading and trying to configure everything for the past 2 days and have gotten practically no where.

Wrye Bash has also been called Wrye Smash, among other things. So, yeah, there's quite a few Smash patches floating about...

I haven't got a clue which mods have been transferred from Oldrim to SSE, but make sure you haven't got ANY oldrim mods installed that contain meshes (meaning they have a plug-in) that haven't been upgraded through the SSE Creation Kit.

 

Oldrim mods are made in form i.d. 43 while SSE needs form i.d. 44. Not every Oldrim mod will cause damage to your save, but a lot will in the long run.

The only Oldrim mod I have installed atm is a ui sound changer. I can try turning it off, but I've had it in my install practically since the beginning with no issues. Could be the problem though, I will take a look.

 

Edit: Can confirm, took out the oldrim mod, rolled back to a save before I was having major issues and the game doesn't CTD, but it just straight up crashes, and pulls the whole "Skyrim Special Edition has stopped working".

 

Idk, I guess it's trial and error time to find the mod? Oldrim did not work out for me, being even more of a mess to deal with.

 

Edit x2: Disabled all mods, tried to load a save, did the exact same thing. New game with all mods on only crashed when one of Mihail's mods made a sound. I honestly have no idea what the problem is and I think it's just my game and save are done.

While it is true that it is better to not start uninstalling mods (with a plug-in) midway through a game, it is also true (like you said) that it depends on what kind of mod we're talking about. If it's a mod that adds a few paintings in Breezehome, for instance, deleting that mod won't harm the game and your save will load. So your emphasis on "never" is a touch exaggerated.

Modding can get seriously frustrating, I know. The problem with the whole thing is that everything can go smoothly until this one added mod all of a sudden throws sand in the machine and everything comes to a halt. Now, the thing is that a lot of the time, when adding mods that make changes to certain things that only appear later in the game, you can play for a few hundred hours without adding/changing any mods and then all of a sudden, wham, it's bye-bye Kansas and you don't have a clue what causes the crash.

 

In any case, when encountering problems, the best thing to do is to start afresh (or at least with just the mods you're pretty sure of they work properly) and add mods bit by bit as you go along until the lights go out again. It's a long and tiresome process, but it's more or less the only failsafe action one can take. I myself have spent literally days on end in FO4 to weed out clashing mods, armed with a tin of Valium and the phonenumber of a shrink at hand.

 

Haven't caught if you use it yes or no, but try LOOT for sorting load order purposes.

 

And another thing: avoid using mods that have bug reports, especially reports that haven't been answered for a year or so and/or mods that are known to cause serious problems with other mods. Those mods are often more than okay, but only when used with little to no other mods insalled. Sure, a few things will take a lot of reading comments and stuff, but in the end it'll pay off.

 

Last but not least: save, save, SAVE, SAAAAVE. Lots and lots of times. Before you enter a place, before speaking to folk, before interacting with whatever can be interacted with. Save.

 

If interested, here's my load order as copied from LOOT. Two hundred-plus hours in without a crash, 326 mods, 213 plug-ins plus the NVT-NAT ENB.
