energycoffee
I use a separate email address for each service I sign up for. This allows me to see which services are sending me emails, and also shows me which companies are selling my information. Starting Thursday, March 22 I have been receiving spam emails to the address I am registered with on this forum. So far, I have received 8 messages. The messages appear to be originating from Microsoft Live! mail, and not sent through the forum. I believe I have my privacy settings set as strict as possible (and always have), so I'm not sure how my email address for this forum has been leaked. Is information being sold, or was the forum database recently breached? I have no choice but to "black hole" all messages being sent to my registered email address; however, other users might not be so fortunate. Can any mods/admins offer some explanation as to why my email address is now in the hands of spammers? Has anybody else noticed an increase in spam? Most of the messages I receive are from "sweet, sassy ladies" who want me to see their photos.
buddah
They are only available to the admins [6] who can access your email address directly, and no we do not sell information. Dark0ne has plainly stated this in the past. In the many years I have been here I have only seen the email from the forums used three times for bulk mailings of important information. Who are you receiving the spam from ? A pm response may be best on the spam. As for an explanation, I have none. Perhaps Dark0ne may have an answer. Thandal
Adding my 2-septims, in the 2-1/2 yerars I've been a member, I've never recieved spam in my registered email in-box as a result of being on the Nexus. None. Can't say why a specific address might be getting some now, but since the issue doesn't appear to be widespread among Nexus users I'm thinking the compromise of the address occurred elsewhere. (Spammers aren't known for being very selective when they get ahold of a new list of valid addresses...)
energycoffee
Hey guys, Thanks for the quick replies. The spam is coming from all different addresses. For example: Ashley <[email protected]>, Katie Elmers <[email protected]>, Melanie <[email protected]>, Kikki Murphy <[email protected]> It's all coming from "women" and contains text such as: What have you been up to all these years? It is a sensational guide that helps to understand you how to win some woman. http://xxxxxxxxxxx.tumblr.com/ Yours sincerely, [ENG_FIRST_NAME] Adderiy (only the URL has been modified) The address could have been picked up randomly somewhere else, but it's strange that I've been a member here since 2010 and have only recently started receiving these messages last week. I have also never used this email address for any other site/service. Like I said, it's not a huge deal for me since I can just block the messages being sent to this address, but I'm curious if others are receiving spam as well. I was also trying to figure out if I maybe missed a privacy setting that inadvertently exposes my email address to the public, but it doesn't look like it. I guess we'll see if anybody else shows up in this thread with a similar problem. Let's hope it's just me. Fonger
but I'm curious if others are receiving spam as well.nope BTW consider scanning your computer to see if somebody installed a keylogger Edited March 30, 2012 by Fonger
JimboUK
I'd second what Fonger said, I'd also change your password as well, something isn't right.
WorldShaperDragon
Check for keyloggers first, then change your password, since otherwise its just going to get compromised again.
JimboUK
I would also suggest this http://www.trusteer.com/product/trusteer-rapport it's recommended by a lot of banks, one of its better features is encrypting keystrokes.
Kaldhore
Is it possible this came from a download? Well sorry yes it IS possible I mean DID it come from a download - if you save your downloads scan each one and let everyone know.
Izichial
Check the recipients. If there are multiple similar addresses a spam bot could just have brute forced your address, although I suppose it'd be possible for it to remember that the address worked if it didn't get a "doesn't exist" error of some kind back, not my area of expertise. Like you, I'm fairly paranoid about my email, using a junk one (my old hotmail account that I'm otherwise only using for messenger) to sign up for most things that requires it. I've had some spam get through to my main email but there's never been any pattern to it and for me it has always been mails targeted at around half a dozen recipients with email addresses very similar to mine. If that isn't the case for what you're getting, your guess is as good as mine.
