Expand visible portion of a photo?

I have kindof an interesting question: is there a way to expand a photo's visible area, kindof like when a movie goes from fullscreen to widescree, you end up seeing more to the sides tham what you could before with fullscreen.

Basically, I'm wondering if the same concept can apply to a photo, if there is more to a photo than what we actually see and if there is a way to expand what we see. I know this question is a bit of a long shot and I'm hoping I asked it right and understandable

When they convert a native 4:3 fullscreen image to 16:9 widescreen you're not getting more, you're actually getting less, they zoom in and then crop it, you lose from the vertical and gain nothing horizontally.

yeah, there's those "square geometric progression' conversion-y things

about aspect-ratio etc...

 

though, forgive me I get "Ross-Littlewood paradox-y" on those kinda questions

I thought the question was more;

To me, the above conjures in the minds-eye, that sequence in Blade Runner 1,

"enhance, enhance" --- from metadata and a crucial photo, the protagonist is able to 'zoom around the VR/augmented area".

seemingly, as if from the information in a single photo alone!

even if that's not truly from 1 photo, though rather collated metadata recreation, it's still fairly neat!

and the compression stuff that smart-cameras use to translate from a fisheye-lens to a 'flat' image...

it's a similar kinda-issue as the square-progression.

there's a compression-curve at which point its not possible to get any more info out of that.

(more than 'spherical aberration' etc, it's the compression-horizon).

I had hoped some of the awesome 360'vid makers and Holographers would chime in with how they got interested in that hehehe.

 

then, there's stuff like 'holography' or other information encoding formats etc.

so, they can see 'more than the window' of say a 4x6.

that's "cheating" though if the constraint is a given technique, not an 'apples and oranges' "format wars" hehe.
