2 characters. Same mods. One crashes, one doesn't?

Hi guys.

Okay so after following Dirty Weasels modding guide, I've got my game running sweet.

However.....

Both myself, and my lad have a character each. Using the same mods. Mine plays just fine. My sons however, keeps crashing...

The only difference is I started with Unbound, and he used the vanilla start. I can't see what difference that would make though.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

The stock start has a bunch of activity going on. There is a fight for resources as mods attempt to start up during this time. With any alternate start type of mod, there will be much less activity going on. As a result, mods won't be fighting for resources so much. This one scenario at the beginning of the game can make or break one's game hours down the road. All it takes is for one mod to not properly process for issues to appear at some point.

My suggestion, if your son wants to play the stock start but also have mods, would be to use Alternate Start: Live Another Life. It has a stock start option that can be selected after creating the character and configuring any mods via MCM or other in-game menus.

The other option is to disable all mods (except character appearance mods) until the player's hands are freed (just inside Helgen Keep) or after completely exiting Helgen.

The mystery deepens...

Okay so he started a new game using unbound. EXACTLY the same mods as me. Same starting point. After about 15 minutes, it crashed. I've not had any crashes at all so far. The odd freeze, but I'm putting that down to heavy memory usage. Through mods, and textures. No CTD though...

I'm baffled.

He's pissed....

Same mods with same setting options? Is it the same computer system? Could there be anything running in the background when he plays that is not when you play? At this point, is his play style different than yours? Walking instead of running can improve performance simply by allowing a bit more time for processes to complete as one transitions overland.

If it is the same computer and he plays immediately following your turn, try fully exiting the game and restarting.

Hiya buddy, have a question, the answer of which may solve your problem. When setting up FiSS and Skytweak did you create a new 'default profile'? Is that new profile for Skytweak the same one your loading in your 'good' non crashy game or the one your lad is loading in his bad very crashy games? See where this is going? I have actually been having some inexplicable crashes for potentially same reason. For months I've been using a FiSS preset I created last September as a test when my INI files where not quite setup. Heck I don't even remember if at that point i'd installed Beth.ini. Then like a monkey I've been adding them same FiSS preset's back into the on all my profiles, so all my testing and tweaking an messing around may have been in vain. As you have a good working game it may be prudent to make a FiSS preset for skytweak from your game. Then try it on your' lads game an make sure he don't mess with it. 225 perk points at level 1 would have tempted me as a young'un

Its worth a try and even if I'm wrong and it wasn't the problem its something to remember for the future that setup is fantastic, very powerful and gives you a huge amount of absolute control. But it can also kill the game. So be really carful.

As for Vanilla starts, because I use ASLAL I make sure everything is setup in that prison cell. All my MCM's then make a new save before I talk to the statue. I also test the vanilla start to make sure it works. To me its a great indicator as to the game's stability. I've seen the start so many times I can tell if its all going to plan or not. Then when I get into a safe room with Hadvar or Ralof I exit the game and then start the game for real after a full system reboot.
