the current crop of keyboards the majority of the post 2001 ones are utterly crap

even the more expensive ones who only have a lot of unneeded unwanted flashy features still have soft plastic keys with a mushy barly tactile feeling the last god keyboard i had is from 2003 it came with my old p4 and was alogitech but even that keyboard was rather fabricated out of mediocre plastic after barley 2 years of use i had worn a hole in the space bar

by comparison to the older keyboards the modern keyboards are nothing short of pathetic

i am currently usinga apple pro keyboard from 2001 with a quit nice tactile clicking feel and a compaq ps2 keyboard from 1998 with slightly smooth keys from use but otherwise in perfect working order

but these and surley the pathetic slabs of palstic that are passing for keyboards these days can stand up to the tanks from the 1980's

and surley not to the ibm model M keyboard

even apples current keyboards are worthless

the ones that they shipped till 2006 are stil good it dubs as a see through paperclip tray and other filth but its still a worthwhile keyboard the thin pieces of alimunim and chicklet keys they try to pass off as keyboards are just horrible

 

are there any keyboard current keyboards left with a tactile feedback with keys that arent mushy or so cheap you smash right through them and dont cost an arm and a leg ?

I have one I think you would like. It's the original IBM model M 101 key. Made in 1988 and still works fine. This thing weighs more than double what a new one does. The keys all have a solid feel with the IBM distinctive tactile feel. None of the key faces show any sign of wear after 20 years of hard use. I picked it up used in about 1995.

 

There is nothing fancy about it. No internet function keys, no special media keys. It doesn't need any special drivers. It was made for office use and looks like it. But it WORKS!

Don't think you'll find any new ones with those features. For whatever reason the designs seem to call for all these extra buttons on the keyboard (sound controls, dvd controls, internet shortcuts), and a bunch of other useless features. The key issue probably has to do with the whole ergonomic thing. By having softer keys, it is less of an inpact to press each key, which while not an issue for most of us, could be one for people who are constantly typing away at 1000 words a minute. It probably also is there to reduce excess noise from dozens of keyboards being used at the same time within a fairly small space.

 

Best bet is to look around on e-bay for a used on in good condition. Just make sure it's been cleaned before being sold. There is alot of garbage which falls into those little spaces between keys (hair, dead skin, food particles).

Well my keyboard is great but i cant tell ya what brand or anything all i can tell ya about the keyboard is that its from 2006 and i paid over 130$ for it (i went to Future shop and back then future shop was reallly really expensive)

 

It has harened plastic (and metal plates on the bottom beleive it or not...) ive tried stabing my keyboard to test its strength and well it can stop me from breaking it with a knife at full power...

and about the mushyness.. its all about keeping your keyboards keys clean (you can take a screw driver to most keys on the keyboard and put em in your dish washer!) but my keyboard never gets mushy it is however dirtyer then crud!

i seem to be having more issues with the mouse than key board. my keyboard is an older black compaq keyboard i got from a friend a good 4 years ago but my logitech 1600 dpi gaming mouse is starting to fail, the left clicker is shot and the cord got cut in half so each small wire inside the big black one is duct taped together. im goung to use it until somthing required goes out

I use a laptop most of the time, but whenever I use the PC, I use a keyboard with the cushion in the front. It was made... probably in the 90s, when we got the computer (we never needed to buy another one). It's nothing special, but it's comfortable and has never failed, except for a few stuck keys with a Coca Cola incident :P

I've been using the same logitech keyboard for 3 years and the only sign of wear is on the spacebar. Its slightly worn so it has a shiny look to it. Also the keypad 1 key popped off when I was moving and I am kinda pissed because this is my favorite keyboard and I use the keypad all the time.

my current keyboard (Logitech, unknown model) still works after a year of hard use. But my last good KB still works after 8 years of abuee by my hand (not that I ever beat on it) but some of the keys started to cave in.

brand new keyboards are just as mushy as dirty ones even worse in some casess

its not dirt that causes them to be mushy its the rather weak barley tactile feedback when you hit a key you have the feeling your hitting a cap with a membrane under it instead of a semi mechnaical key which in most cases is true

I thoroughly enjoy my Merc stealth keyboard, particularly when I have my home office dark for gaming. :)
