Dogmeat keeps getting stuck in a command mode

Completely uninstalling the game squashed the Dogmeat STAY or FOLLOW bug. It is a legitimate bug, abnormal interface behavior persisting across multiple saves across hours of game play.

We shall see what happens once it again rears its ugly head.

I did install the full dialogue mod, if that helps.

If you have Dogmeat follow, see if that will get your issue sorted (issue the follow, then get close and see how the four options are doing). Also, check Steam to see how things are set up on the controller front. Windows own settings in regard to primary controller may help too. I will recommend having the Unofficial Patch in your game that fixes a lot of bugs.

[Edit 1-8-20] Thanks for the correction, Metaphorset! Appreciate that!

What's being described is the follower bug. It happens when a companion that is currently actively following you is sent home, and the script that sends them there, breaks.

It can happen to any of the followers, not just Dogmeat. The reason why it's more evident on the other followers is because dogmeat doesn't have voice lines that we'd hear over and over and over, like the others do, when they get hit by the bug.

Console commands don't always work to fix them. It depends on how broken they are.

Essentially, what it is, is that they know they're supposed to go somewhere, but don't can't understand where, because that part of the script didn't issue correctly. So they follow you around like a zombie, going "does not compute" "does not compute" and you pretty much can't get them to do anything other than just react to encounters, give off their random lines, and be an annoyance.

Something that sometimes works, sometimes doesn't is to install Companions Go Home https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/10029 which re-writes their "home" locations, and can give you the option of clearing settlements that they're assigned to.

[/edit]

Edit- And yeah, this bug isn't necessarily because of mods. This was an issue that started way back before there were mods for the game. So the base of it, is something that Bethesda did wrong. However, mods can increase the chances of the script breaking, and Creation Club Crap has the potential to break a lot of things. Especially now with the new game update changing the way that headers work.

Not necessarily. I've never experienced this behaviour with any other companion, only Moon-Moon seems to have this issue every now and then, even without sending him home. Usually it happens if he goes into "down state" and you don't heal him right away, because you have your hands full with fighting crap. As soon as combat ends, he snaps out of "down state" instantly, sometimes even without a getting-up animation. He just goes *poof- healed* and is weirded out from there on.

(So, as rdsmoreira in #17 already said... )

I know, it sounds horrible but giving him a little "heads up" by whacking (or shooting) him until he he goes down and then healing him became quite the routine for me for a while.

As my old man used to say "It fixes the TV, so it might work for you, too." Ah, memories...

Metaphorset - Very interesting. Most likely, DM might act like this because he's on a different script set than the other companions?

It's interesting and informational to know. Much appreciated! I actually don't spend much time with him, I get tired of him really quick. Thanks very much for the correction, I'll update my post. ;)

As for what I quoted in red. My first good laugh of the day! Thanks! I'll also have to try to remember that for the next time I'm around my problematic nephew! :D
