wukong80
For the last 2 months I've been playing, I have killed over a dozen dragons but I've only managed once to finish one at close range with a sword. Otherwise I always have to keep my distance and use bows and magic. The thing is every time - and I really mean every time - I try to go closer to a landed dragon, it will do a killmove on me : the one where it grabs me by the head, swings me in the air and throws me away ... So I'm not sure if it's a kinda of bug or a mod I have ( I have deadly dragons ) that does that, but I find it really disappointing since now I'm lvl 34 and have a couple of resistance to frost, fire etc and I really would like to go more closer to the dragons to get epic fight with them when they land, not just the hidding somewhere at distance with my bow. Does this happen to everyone else or is it just me... ? Is there anything you could suggest I could try or maybe change my fighting dragons approach so I could finally end up in close fight with them ? Thanks ! thompsonar
What's your character's stats and equipment like? I thought kill moves only happen when your enemy can do enough damage to kill you with one hit (not sure if it's the same for dragons). Deadly Dragons is probably making them so strong they can still "one shot" you consistently. It may help to approach the dragon from the side/rear, though I've still had a kill move initiate on me when I'm standing behind the dragon (everything just sort of jumps and suddenly I'm in front and being eaten). For up close combat you need a high armor rating, even then it's not really a good idea to just run up and stand there swinging. Keep moving toward the back of the dragon, get in a few hits and run away again. I used to use whirlwind sprint to get close to them fast (or to get away fast) which helped some. You really do just have to try out different things. With DD installed it's obviously going to be much harder. But it's such a great mod and really the way things should have been. I've been playing with mage characters a lot recently so I haven't done much up close combat. I'm not sure how much DD has changed in the latest versions. I got rid of my old saves so my "warriors" are all gone otherwise I'd test it out.
RedRavyn
What thompsonar said. Deadly Dragons makes dragons overpowering for low level characters, or characters who have been poorly leveled up (like using crafing to grind your levels, without actually improving any of your survival skills). I also have a mod installed that makes destruction magic more potent, and I think it affects the dragon breath weapon, too. I wound up uninstalling DD (due to a few bugs in it) and the breath weapons don't seem to be as dangerous any more. You really have to watch your Health bar carefully when fighting dragons. Either have a good healing spell or lots of health potions. Buff yourself with appropriate elemental protection, too. Like thompsonar said, if you're going to tackle a dragon head-on, don't do it "head-on". With DD installed, all but the most powerful of characters can probably be "one-shotted" by a dragon's bite attack. You pretty much have to wear them down from a distance and then rush in for the kill with melee weapons, if you're really intent upon seeing that kill move. I've experienced what thompsonar said, as well -- being behind a dragon and then suddenly being in front and getting munched. I don't know if that's a DD bug or not, but what I found out was that if you approach obliquely from the rear you stand a better chance with your melee attacks. It helps if you have some allies who can keep the dragon occupied while you do this. Otherwise, he's likely to try to turn to face you. My main tactic against dragons involves bows and magic. Yes the kill moves are nice, but I'll settle for dead dragons, instead.
wukong80
First thanks for your replies. I'm not sure but I don't think it's just Deadly Dragons which causes dragons to do that kill move any time I get close. Anyway IMO Deadly Dragons is a must - I started playing without it but really dragons were just so easy it was not fun at all ( even easier than trolls or spiders ... ). I had some difficult times until lvl 20 but was still able to kill them and since it's got a bit easier but still challenging. Nevertheless it seems I can only take out dragons with my bow 'cause anytime I get closer I will get that killmove. I wear light armour but it's elven and should be pretty good, and also when I try to go close combat with a dragon I would only do it with my health bar full. I will try however to change a bit my tactics and see if trying to attack them from different angles and/or running back as soon as possible will help or not. Otherwise I will just have to keep taking dragons out from distance with my bow. It's no big deal since it's not I can't kill dragons, I'm getting pretty good at taking them out with my bow, it's just for the fun and change sometimes it would nice to get closer and draw my sword. Perraine
I think BGS 'nerfed something in one of it's patches, really quietly! As I have the same problem, can't get close to dragons (front OR back) without that kill animation occurring, it MAY have something to do with Armor or a Perk, somewhere hidden in that code, but it has DEFINITELY changed somehow, it could have been 1.3 or 1.4 or 1.5, I didn't notice because I was playing an existing high level "tank" character at the time and basically nothing hurt him very much, not even an Elder Dragon, but since then I've started a new toon and now we have this issue :wallbash: I DOES add to the realism/excitement a bit because you have to be way more careful with low level and/or low armor characters... I also noticed that Bandit Chiefs now seem to have some "instakill" moves that they never had before (I particularly like the one where they put their sword behind your head, then head butt you repeatedly  )
Georgiegril
? I thought kill moves only happen when your enemy can do enough damage to kill you with one hit (not sure if it's the same for dragons). Since the 1.5 patch I've had killmove animation when stabbing a little spiderr and firebombing a skeever. It's funny to watch, but definitely overly dramatic. Yeah they can be over dramatic in situations like that. But I do love it when I'm running through the wilderness and a fox/rabbit/elk is running from me a ways off and I shoot off an icespike/firebolt and get the "kill cam" without really aiming. Pretty cool.
