Just reinstalled Fallout 3

Recommended Posts

Today I was forced to make a clean install of FO3, my hard drive died again and I've lost all data folder backups I had so now I need to start from scratch. So I'll just make a thread to mark everything I did, in case I missed something or someone has some suggestions.

The last load order I managed to find is this one, from 24. April:

Ones I underlined I already downloaded again, the ones in bold are things I made (most are gone but I'll make them again, and it seems more files than just the ones I bolded are, well, bold), the ones crossed are lost forever (750 mods lost http://www.sherv.net/cm/emo/sad/crying.gif). The ones left untouched are the ones I still need to download.

Now to the installation process.

  1. Installed the game and DLCs
  2. Installed the 1.7 patch
  3. Installed GECK
  4. Installed GECK update 1.5
  5. Started Launcher and game to generate ini files
  6. Tweaked the inis for performance (irrelevant, but still)
  7. Installed FOMM, rand and configured it
  8. Ran GFWL Disabler
  9. Ran ArchiveInvalidation Invalidated
  10. Installed FOSE v1.2 b2
  11. Installed FO3Edit
  12. Installed a whole bunch of mods in half an hour http://forums.nexusmods.com/public/style_emoticons/dark/biggrin.gif

So, did I miss a part of the process? Did I screw up something? I don't think so, but it's been over a year since I installed Fallout for the last time so I think it's better to ask.

And now the current load order:

It doesn't crash, it doesn't freeze, it doesn't glich (at least not more than usual), it doesn't cause diarrhea. It's stabile http://forums.nexusmods.com/public/style_emoticons/dark/dance.gif.

So, does anyone have any comments/suggestions/questions? And of course, did I do everything right and do I need anything else? It's been a really long time since I installed it so I honestly don't know.

When in doubt about your load order, use BOSS. But your mods are fairly simple anyway. Not a lot of stuff that conflicts with each other as far as I can tell, so you should be fine.

I don't recognize a lot of your old mods lol. I either never used them or they were more popular before I started playing, which was only last year.

I can suggest you give The Groovatron a try though, since I see you have Some Poses. It includes Some Poses and a lot of other pose mods and features, and the great and easy-to-use interface to let you and other NPCs use the animations. It's really designed with screenshots in mind, because you can even change the lighting, color saturation, change NPC's clothing, and so on.

I always use BOSS, it makes sorting the load order much easier than doing it by yourself.

Probably because I released only a few, they are mostly armor/outfit retextures made to be used as a standalone, rather than a simple retexture and personal mod tweaks. Some however are for testing the models I make, which are now unfortunately lost http://forums.nexusmods.com/public/style_emoticons/dark/sad.gif.

I've been wanting to try Groovatron for a long time but I never installed it. I might as install it now that I don't have Some Poses.

Perhaps, but BOSS isn't exactly 100 percent flawless. And the more experienced you get, the more you'll want to start sorting your load order by yourself.

And in the end nothing beats a pair of human eyes checking one's load order for conflicts and the like. Guess that's where I come in.

"StreetLights - Wasteland.esp" is obsolete if you have the latest version of the main Streetlights mod.

"DUIF3Extras.esp": Same story. Obsolete if you have the latest version of Darnified UI.

Put your Fellout plugins just above your merged patch. Aside from Remastered, there don't seem to be any other mods below it which seem to conflict with it, but one can never be too certain. And it's generally a good idea to put weather/lighting changing mods as low as possible.

It's recommended not to include the Remastered mod in a merged patch. (same goes for masterupdating btw) Make a new merged patch without Remastered once you've corrected your load order. And you should thus also put the Remastered mod below the merged patch.

You should also check to see if you have all the necessary comparability patches for Remastered. As far as I can see you're missing the patches for Realistic interior lighting, Fellout and maybe more, but you'll have to check that for yourself.

(Yes, the patches are to be placed below Remasered and are thus also not to be included in a merged patch.)

Can't see anything wrong with your installation process btw. Though I would recommend to check as often as possible whether mods you just installed actually work as advertised.

I don't really do poses except when I want a laugh. I make Moriarty do stupid dances because he's so arrogant, etc. But I use the Groovatron for a lot of stuff especially for bug testing/fixing. It has a lot of features that are useful for that.

@BlackRampage I usually use BOSS as a "rough estimate" and then I sort the mods manually. It's not completely accurate when it comes to some things but it does most of the job right.

As for Street lights - Wasteland and DUIF3Extras, they are both old versions I found on my flash drive. I have 1.8 Street lights and DUI is also pretty old. If I disable DUIF3Extras I lose some of the things in the right-side brackets.

I always kept Fellout near the end of the load order, but never the last. The mods below it are texture/model replacer, except RIL and Remastered.

I didn't include Remastered in the patch, I'm not that crazy. Also, I generally don't like having mods below my merged patch, only if I'm testing them and I don't want to wait for 10 mins for FO3Edit to start up, but I'll put it there. And I do have the compatibility patches but I forgot to restart FOMM before exporting the load order so they weren't included in the post. I was always hesitant to use Remastered, it's a nice mod and it can make the game run better but still, that's a lot of changed data and it's bound to conflict with something, plus FO3 always worked fine for me so I didn't need it. It's there for now but I'm not sure how long will it stay there.

And my new load order with a cleanup:

I honestly can't recognise FO3 now. Before, I had a million small mods and tweaks I made myself, a whole bunch of different armors and outfits I made with a lot of retextures I found on the nexus and a huge selection of weapons I assembled from various replacers and weapon mods. Now there is none of that and the game looks a whole lot different.

@HosokawaTakuya I use poses for fun, when I get bored of all the shooting, stabbing and scavenging. I once gave Mother Maya, Confessor Cromwell and those children of atom people some groovy clothes, threw some hookahs and joints all over the church of atom and then I used poses to make them look like they are stoned. I think I still got that screenshot somewhere on my flash drives.

Then what's the problem? If they're old then just download and install the newest versions of both mods. As for the darnified mod: The latest version of it has the extras in the main .esp. So you won't lose any of the things in the right side brackets.

The description pages/notes of both mods confirm what I already mentioned btw.

Understandable, but there's a good reason for that. See Jeoshua's last post in the Remastered comments thread.

I was always hesitant to use Remastered, it's a nice mod and it can make the game run better but still, that's a lot of changed data and it's bound to conflict with something, plus FO3 always worked fine for me so I didn't need it.

Well, I'm sure you know as well as I do that conflicts can never be 100 % avoided. Especially when making a mod which changes as much as Remastered does. But one cannot judge a mod based on whether or not it conflicts with other mods.

Also, remastered cannot and will not "fix" your game if it doesn't works right to begin with. It's more meant to fix errors which were already present in the vanilla game just like Error Corrections, the Unofficial patch, etc. do. That and it "fixes" some things which simply didn't make sense in the vanilla game. Like paladin Bael (the guard at the Citadel entrance) disappearing after completing the "Take it Back!" quest. (and much more of course)

Still, I will not force you or anyone to actually use the mod.

As for not being able to recognize Fo3 after reinstalling: I know the feeling all too well.

You may need to make a few more patches yourself if you get Remastered, depending on what stuff Remastered changes that you don't like (you can check using FO3Edit). I had to make a patch for Apocalypse Armory + Fallout Wanderers Edition to load after Remastered, aside from the already existent compatibility patch, because Remastered removes the new Apocalypse Armory grenades from the grenade hotkey list. It was a simple thing to do though and wasn't really much trouble at all. Just that Remastered doesn't have Apocalypse Armory support yet. I know you don't have FWE and AA in your load order, but it's just an example of some things that Remastered might do to your game that you may want to fix yourself after you get it.

That being said, when you get all of that figured out, you're probably gonna end up like me. I barely ever get a CTD anymore. It's crazy. I'm not used to the game not crashing every now and then. I'm actually able to finish entire quest lines, go scavenging and engage in huge gunfights, all without any noticeable bugs or errors (except for when I'm bug testing my own mods of course).

There are these times when I kinda expect the game to crash, a phobia I got from playing it with buggy mods, but it turns out it's just a very slight stutter then the game continues normally. I'm talking 6+ hours of playing and the game didn't crash or show anomalies whatsoever. I got tired of sitting down already and didn't even notice that 6 hours had already passed, so I stopped playing. But I think even if I hadn't stopped, the game would still have been running smoothly. Got a heavily modded game (140+ mods, including the big mods like FWE, Apocalypse Armory, MMM, Fellout, a few compatible weather mods, and so on. Not counting all the mesh and texture replacers, compatibility patches that merge together, etc.).

The thing is, I got used to the "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" system. If a mod works fine I don't care how many new versions come out I'll stick with that one (it all started with Apocalypse Armory and the 1.92 update which crashed the game every time you see a weapon).

Yeah, I know, some conflicts are always there. And I never judged Remastered, at the time I was just afraid that I might mess up the game since I had a very large amount of mods that change a very large amount of data. But now that they are gone I decided to try it out and I like it.

Also, remastered cannot and will not "fix" your game if it doesn't works right to begin with. It's more meant to fix errors which were already present in the vanilla game just like Error Corrections, the Unofficial patch, etc. do. As far as I can understand how it works, it fixes errors that have a small impact on gameplay but have a potential to make problems (I probably got it wrong). So now instead of dealing with problems, the engine "fixes" them on the fly (I probably got that wrong too). And I really like that Bael is back, after Broken Steel, front of the Citadel looked really empty.

But my personal favourite, Megaton gates now lower when I exit and raise when I come back, and it's not bugged. It's all I ever wanted *wipes tears*.

Well, before I was forced to reinstall FO3, I played it for more then a year with no mod related CTDs whatsoever. It was all in sorting and tweaking, the reason why I had 750+ mods with more than half being my tweaks and corrections.

There are these times when I kinda expect the game to crash, a phobia I got from playing it with buggy mods, but it turns out it's just a very slight stutter then the game continues normally. The funny thing is, I create a new save every few minutes because I always believe the game will crash (fobia from the early days when I first started downloading mods). Since I got a hang of it, I only had 2 major problems but they had nothing to do with the mods, a corrupted ini file after HDD defragmentation, and a broken launcher due to a virus. Other than that, nothing.

And I must be a mod addict (yes, I confess). In 2 days I got up to 100 plugins and the game runs as smooth as a baby's bottom http://forums.nexusmods.com/public/style_emoticons/dark/dance.gif.

Yes, that's what I thought so too. Which is why I requested that little fix to be included.
