NPC Dialogue

When creating an npc as a follower or questgiver etc... do you have to check a certain option to be able to talk to him/her ?? I've been trying to create followers and quest givers and i've followed tutorials fully, but when i come to talk to the npc no dialogue box would pop up, instead they would just say random preset words :/ The npc's quest is there because i've tried activating it with the console and it worked...the only problem is that the npc just wont activate his dialogue options :/

Make sure your NPC is using the proper voice type.

Make sure the conditions on the dialog infos return TRUE.

Make sure your NPCs are in the proper factions, because this is a condition on some dialog.

Make sure you are not using a custom race or custom voice type unless you are sure you know exactly what you are doing.

Make sure that the voiced dialog is attached to the dialog infos, or else make sure that the silent dialog is attached. (This is for if you have silence and text flashing past in the blink of an eye. This does not apply if you do not even see the dialog topics to click on.)

so you have to set factions ??? If i used a recorded voice for the npc, does that mean ill have to create a new faction for it ??

Sry but i just tried following tutorials and their's worked but mine didn't and im not rly used to the ck yet :/

The factions that David is talking about are PotentialFollowerFaction for followers, and PotentialMarriageFaction for marriage npcs.

To make sure that the conditions on your dialog can be met, you have to read them and think about them. Like if there is a line of dialog only said by males, you have to have your NPC be male before the line will be said. If the line is only said by guards, then your NPC will have to be a guard. If the line is only said when the value of variable X == 2, then you will have to play-test that line when you know the variable has been set to that value or find a way to change the value.

If you want to make it so your new NPC only talks with one voice instead of two, and only uses your voice recordings and never the original dialog, then you will need to give your NPC a new custom voice type and attach your new dialog to the NPC.

Factions would mainly be important if you are using dialog from the base game. Like if you wanted a merchant or follower or spouse or something. If you are recording all your own dialog, then factions would only be important if some of your dialog had faction conditions and some of your NPCs could use certain lines and some could not depending on their faction.

I Checked the voice type and they are all correct :/ I even tried removing conditions and setting the speaker option to my npc, but still nothing.

Going over everything i don't think its the voice which is the problem, cause i checked the folder and it contains all recorded voices... i think the problem is in the dialogue cause that is what is not opening ingame, so i won't be able to select the option to start my quest for example, if there is no dialogue box :/

I can't believe this was the problem but i actually managed to fix it. All i did was uninstall skyrim and the creation kit, reinstall skyrim, update it to v1.4, install the creation kit, and when i tried it out it worked perfectly :D Thanks a lot all for your help though :))

This is happening to me. I can create custom voiced NPCs with full dialogues, no sweat, but every single time I have attempted to turn any of them into a follower, I hit a roadblock. Basically, I am able to get the basic "follow me" function to work, at first, for all of my player characters in Skyrim. But then, once I start adding all of the other follower dialogue options, like "dismiss" "trade" "wait" etc. to it, the whole panel disappears completely, unless I have a save that has that follower in my service. So basically, all of those functions work perfectly normally, if I already had that follower in my service in a previous save, but the "follow me" does not trigger at all when I want to get the NPC to follow another one of my player characters. I don't think that I am doing anything wrong. I've spent countless days, and even months on and off trying to troubleshoot this problem, and have followed every tutorial precisely. I've done three re-installs of Skyrim and the Creation Kit, but it still exists. So, until I figure it out, all of my dreams for making elaborate follower characters are diminished. I hate it...I absolutely hate it.
