So the about a week ago i left my computer on overnight to download fallout 3 from steam like i so often do. But that morning it had am error on screen showing that windows has detected a hard disk problem  So i rebooted it and it looks like it has failed the dreaded SMART check. That was about a week ago and if it wasn`t for these constant reminders popping up i wouldn't even know there is a problem.Should i just ignore it or take it to samsung like the error message says? I live in south africa by the way so that might be a problem  Edited by Eddieawsome

If the drive is still under warranty, Samsung should have a number for you to call to get it covered. Trouble is... they will want you to send it to them, and then they will send you a blank one..... which leaves your computer with a drive for a while.

Other option would be to simply purchase another drive, make restore disks for your computer, (should have an option for that somewhere.....) put an O/S on the new drive, move all your stuff over to the new drive, then warranty out the soon to be dead one.

Before doing anything else - back up anything you absolutely cannot afford to lose - because you are on the verge of losing EVERYTHING on that hard drive. It may last another month, or it may not last another 5 minutes. When it crashes - It's probably gone for good. :pinch:

Sigh* well i have a laptop so i guess manual replacement is not a option. So looks like samsung is the way to go, :wallbash:atleast i managed to store most of whats important on that old extension drive i have lying around. Still it kinda sucks to have this happen. here`s hoping the warranty is still in affect. Edited by Eddieawsome

Actually replacing the HD in most laptops is easy. The physical replacement anyway. The hard part is getting the operating system on the new drive - MS has made it difficult for LEGAL users - unless you have a legal DVD of Windows with the proper serial number that you can use to reinstall on the new HD.

For the replacement, google your laptop model and look for a tear down instruction. Usually a couple of screws and the HD slides right out without even opening the case. (there are exceptions though )

If you have a windows DVD that came with your computer then installing and registering is also easy. But for some reason, Most laptop makers save a few cents and do not include a legitimate windows dvd - instead they put a totally useless recovery partition on the HD - If the HD is bad, you cannot use the recovery partition so what good is it? http://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f351/charonn0/ohgeez-1.gif

Take those advices seriously, even if not failing totally this soon, that driver will start to corrupt everything, what can be worsen than the total failure. Such defective HDD could compromise other possible drives by means of confusing the mobo's controller but seems is not the case there.

Don't try saving it, the best action is replacing, As Soon As Possible.
