Problems with Vortex.

I have recently moved from a really good Mod Organise (Nexus Mod Manager) over to the Vortex and I must say it has given me nothing but a headache.

Let me start with a simple download.

I go to download from the Nexus web site via the mod manager link. Like the old NMM program it opens up Vortex and downloads the file, then refuses to show the file in the download list until I manually drag and drop the file over to the box out section below.

Viewing the mods.

I download the mods I can see them in the folder. But they don't show up in the Mod tab for the game, I have to go to downloads and install them from there. This isn't very intuitive at all.

Installed Mods.

So the mods get installed and I can see that Vortex tells me what mods need cleaning which is great and it can also sort out the load order which is another plus, even down to any possible conflicts. Here comes the problem though. I decide to uninstall a mod and click the button to disable and uninstall. All works great. Right until I start the Vortex program again and find that the mod I uninstalled has reinstalled itself and is now present in my game once more.

Deleting mods.

This is not possible at all. I delete the mods via Vortex and it says its done and removes the mod from the list. I then look in the mod folder and find it still sat there even the .esp in my data folder is still there and this is after I disabled the mod and uninstalled it. The only way to get round this problem is to manually delete the mod from the folders. Problem then arises as when you start up Vortex again it sees the mods that have been manually deleted and tries to install them once more.

Importing from the Nexus Mod Manager.

I do this and I see the files transfer over to the Vortex folder. I then wait patiently for it to finish. Once done I can't see any mods in my list nor plugins yet the files have transferred over and I can see them in the data folder and the mod folders.

Nearly every aspect of this program refuses to work as I expect them to operate. Other than loading the game, setting the SKSE as primary the tool add on system works a treat. The load sorting tool has also made my Skyrim LE game a bit more stable than LOOT has in the past. These parts I am impressed with and like a lot. It is just the mod managing side of the program that seems to be very broken.

Due to the Vortex program messing up with randomly installing mods I specifically asked it to uninstall and delete I have had to reinstall Skyrim SE and Skyrim VR all over again from scratch. Thankfully I have not let Vortex manage any mods from Skyrim LE as this has been left to Nexus Mod Manager to manage and download mods and install them.

Edit:

Another thing to note is this picture that I have attached to this post. The folder is where the mods are meant to be deployed to right? There is nothing in there nor in my game data folder yet Vortex says there is and all I did was download them.

None of the things you reported sound like things vortex actually does - either you're the first to encounter not one but four very odd bugs or there is a bit of confusion.

your edit shows at least two misconceptions you have:

a) "deploy" (in the context of vortex) means putting the files of enabled mods into the game directory. So no, the directory you've shown is not the one where mods are deployed to, it's the directory where mods are installed to and deployed from.

b) The mods in your screenshot are uninstalled, meaning they are not installed. They are just download archives (.zip, .7z, .rar, ...) in your download directory. They don't have a mod directory until you install them.

Besides: Your screenshot clearly contradicts what you said further up.

You said

I download the mods I can see them in the folder. But they don't show up in the Mod tab for the game, I have to go to downloads and install them from there. This isn't very intuitive at all.

But then you show a screenshot clearly listing mods you've just downloaded and never installed.

Little bit confused about installer. It does not let me select installation path. So should I download portable version of Vortex because installing to "C:\Program Files\Black Tree Gaming Ltd" is little bit odd since UAC and security programms like Avast! or Malwarebytes or Whole Windows 10 does not like it very much.

Since yesterday I wasn't able to install "Less Loot And Ammo Modular Gameplay Rebalance" Because of UAC. And what I have heard is not to never ever install managers or mods inside "C:\Programs Files\" Or "C:\Program Files (x86)\" since admin priviledges.

Other mods installed fine, this one did not. Gonna re-install Vortex and this mod for couple of times. I'll report back and try to find workarounds.

Since my system is in finnish language sending a screenhot from UAC popup can be little bit dis-informational.

a) this is offtopic.

b) On the contrary, Windows very much likes software to be installed to program files. That is, in fact, the only location where software is supposed to be installed. Yes you need admin privileges to do that, that's the point! This way other software (like viruses) can't change your applications without first asking you for admin rights too.

a) Got it.

b) Sorry for offtopic, just learning way around these forums... (not starting a thread about every single issue, and this just sounded problematic for me :p )

The mods shown I had just downloaded along with 13 other files. So where are the others then?

The other mods downloaded at the sametime as the ones shown were not installed either and remained in the download page. The ones shown I had not enabled, deployed, or installed and yet they show up in the mod section of Vortex.

So something is very wrong with Vortex if only a few of the files I have downloaded are shown in the mods section. Vortex is showing only 4 out of 13 mods.

The bugs I have had are as listed.

Are the other files you've downloaded even for Skyrim SE (as in: did you download them from the nexusmods skyrimse section)? Have they finished downloading?

In your screenshot, part of the vortex screen is hidden by the explorer window, do you have a filter active for one of the columns I can't see?

  • 4 months later...

OK, so i thought that "transferring" all NMM from FO4 was a good idea. BUT there was many many conflicts with "load before/after/conflicts with" that needed to be corrected and i don't know what has to be "before/after/conflicts with" should be. The game ran ok but some things where not working right and looked wrong in the game. So I thought the best thing to do was just delete all mods through Vortex and load all my mods one by one and let the really cool Vortex software figure it out for me. I deleted all the mods so the mod page was empty. All good right - no - all the plugins are still in the plugins page of Vortex. I uninstalled Vortex removing registry files also. Reloaded Vortex and the plugins and saved games are still there but the mods page is empty.

What do I need to do to start all over. I do still have NMM installed and it still works good. I believe that the loading system of Vortex will help with mod organization within the game software.

Also i really liked how NMM categorized the mods into what they will do in the game. IE Clothing, animations bla bla bla, did I miss something in the setting that will do this.

It is a good idea if you are starting a brand new game. Otherwise, stay with your previous mod manager and game.

BUT there was many many conflicts with "load before/after/conflicts with" that needed to be corrected and i don't know what has to be "before/after/conflicts with" should be.

Read this: https://wiki.nexusmods.com/index.php/Managing_File_Conflicts

Reloaded Vortex and the plugins and saved games are still there but the mods page is empty.

What is the status of the plugins on your plugins page? Are they enabled or disabled? Do you see any of your plugins in the game data folder?

I'm confused here. Are you proposing to use NMM and Vortex at the same time for mod management? Or have I completely misunderstood you?

Also i really liked how NMM categorized the mods into what they will do in the game. IE Clothing, animations bla bla bla, did I miss something in the setting that will do this.

You did miss something, but it's a bit more complicated than a single setting. You'll find some information here: https://wiki.nexusmods.com/index.php/User_Interface_Overview. Scroll way down until you come to a discussion of "Table Headers" and "Mod Details Pane."

""" Reloaded Vortex and the plugins and saved games are still there but the mods page is empty. """"

> It did happen to me before and this is what I do when deleting everything and starting from zero point.

- Uninstall all Mods / plugins from Vortex

- Delete your game. Mine is installed in : C:\ProgramFiles(86)\Steam\Steamapps\Common\Game

- Delete mods from your mod staging folder. Mine is located in : C:\Users\my name\AppData\Roaming\Vortex\Game

- Delete mods from your Download Folder. Mine is located in : C:\Users\my name\Documents\VORTEX DOWNLOADS ( this is the name of my folder … )

- Delete everything from C:\Documents\MyGames\Game

- Make sure that your Steam Cloud is not ENABLED otherwise your saved games may show up again and this in particular, has nothing to do with Vortex.

- Empty your Recycle Bin and restart your computer.

- Go to Search and try to find if there are still some files/folders from your previous game

Now you can install your game and nothing from your previous game should show up again.
