Componenet Extractor Question

If I set up a component extractor to pull items from my Workbench, and I put in 1 piece of STEEL

Will the component Extractor take and break down every single item that has STEEL in it, even if it has other Components in it? If so, what happens to the Extra components? Do they disappear, or do they get extracted and stored too?


Ex: I put STEEL in the extractor, the extractor takes a Fan (if it can do that) that has STEEL, COPPER, and PLASTIC in it and breaks it down.

Will I just get the STEEL from it and the other Components just Disappear, or will the COPPER and PLASTIC be stored in the conveyor or Workbench as well?

I too am interested in the answer to this question. I have attempted to search for an answer, but have been unsuccessful. I set up one in Sanctuary Hills and put one of each resource component into it. It started spitting out components, but it didn't appear to be removing or breaking down any junk from my workbench.

 

Until I know how it works exactly I have just been dumping junk into the recycler and running that to workbench storage.

So I believe I have the answer.

 

The way the component extractor works is that it will pull the resource component that matches the one in the machine from your settlement workshops. It will also break down any junk items that contain that specific component. It does store the extra components in the workshop and only pulls the components stored in the machine from the scrapped item.

 

In your example of the desk fan it would pull the STEEL from the junk item and convey that through the machine. The remaining components (COPPER and PLASTIC) should be stored in the workbench.

 

For my purposes this machine isn't a good way to simply convert junk into scrap, as it will continuously pull the raw components that match the machine inventory out of my storage as well, which means it will continuously run forever.
