Aegrus
this game is near broken on PC. you almost HAVE to use a controller. hell, FROM didnt even change the screen logos to reflect a keyboard. even if you dont have a controller, it still only tells you what to press as if you had a controller, to me, right there, shows laziness and a horrible port. i wasnt one of the people who wanted the port, nor did i ever plan on getting it for PC (if i need a controller to play a game on PC, then im getting it for my console) but FROM didnt put any time into this port, and its obvious. as that review hector put up said, had this been a port from any other company of any other game, PC fans would be raging right now (and many are) but for some reason, and idky, Dark Souls holds this status around it thats its a god of a video game, the best RPG ever made and whatnot, but oh its ok that its a crappy horrible port, its Dark Souls. but as long as you get some slightly better graphics (which again, isnt from the port, its from a mod. FROM didnt do anything to make it look better) then youre happy. also as the review said, it took this guy who did the mod one day to put the mod out. how could FROM not take that same amount of time to do what he did? its almost like this game has been done since a week after the petition was agreed to, and then its all just been hype since then. im not so sure they worked on it after that. they hyped the game up, or rather PC players did, and they got tons of money from it, only for you all to realize (or some, fail to realize) that you really only got a simple crappy console port and that FROM really didnt do anything special or out of the way for PC players dont get me wrong, ill be getting the DLC for Ps3 when it hits, but as far as Dark Souls on PC goes, its a complete disappointment in my eyes and shows laziness on FROMs part. I'm not getting how you apparently have and like the console version enough to buy the dlc, but think that the pc version is near broken, considering they're the same game, but one has better performance and can be modded. This is especially true since you already obviously have a gamepad of some kind.
Iv000
IDK why people are complaining. Game is working great like I said at a steady 30 FPS. It's not great playing with a keyboard but it's playable. With a controller and the mod fix, I don't see any reason to complain. I didn't have to buy a console to play the game, I'm happy. And thanks for mentioning the new version of the mod, I almost forgot about that.
Aegrus
Ah ha! I got my ps3 controller working with motioninjoy. SOOOOO much better than the mouse and keyboard controls I was using. It feels exactly like the console version now, but with better graphics (AA, AF, higher resolution), and a better frame rate. Also, less online lag. I am so %$&*@%$ happy, it's unbelievable. Dark Souls is my favorite game of all time- it even was on the ps3, when the frame rate wasn't great, and I was playing it on an awful 480p, old and dieing plasma screen tv. But it's like a dream come true when, after waiting all this time for a port, and expecting it to be an unplayable mess, it turns out fantastic, and Dark Souls is finally allowed to shine without the spector of hardware limitations. My only complaints about my favorite game have been removed, leaving it pretty much flawless in my eyes! This game is immortal now. On the pc, we'll always be able to mod it, or enforce higher resolutions, or enforce graphical effects (SSAO, etc.), or mod the textures, (though they're typically good anyway, sometimes great). And the game won't automatically die when new consoles are released. Plenty of pc games keep cult followings forever- not so much with console games. (Though From's games have always been unusually good at gathering cult followings.) Looking forward to spending hundreds of hours on this, exhausting every possible secret. Get ready, Lordran.

Your ps3 controller would work perfectly well with Dark Souls- you'd just need to download the free Motioninjoy software. That's what I did- and the controls are now identical to the ps3 version of the game. (Which I also played.) As for performance- the ps3 and pc version are both capped at the same frame rate, but modded to superior graphics, my pc never gets slowdown when running Dark Souls, whereas the ps3 version at times (Blighttown and some parts in the New Londo Ruins) drops into single digit frame rates. I don't have that great of a pc, either- I spent $600 on it. My video card is an amd 6770, and it is only ever under 55% load while running Dark Souls. My cpu is an Athlon II 3.2 ghz 6-core, and it's only under 30% load. (Though, since Dark Souls only uses about 2 cpu cores, it's probably close to maxing the relevant two 3.2 ghz cores.) Though, since you don't have a desktop atm, your position makes a lot more sense. Edited August 26, 2012 by Aegrus
Aegrus
Just thought it was kind of funny- this is the most divisive game I've ever seen reviewed on metacritic. All the low scores are "BAD PORT, bad graphics, bad controls, too hard, could only play for ten minutes, mods are stupid and don't matter, worst game EVER!!! From software is paying all these high scores!!!" All the high scores are "Bad port, but the game is amazing, so download DSfix and use a gamepad, it'll be the best rpg ever."45 good scores- almost all 10's, 25 bad scores, almost all 0's, only 2 average scores. Either you download the mods and love it as a game, or you rage quit over the bad quality of the port before hardly starting. No middle ground here- only about 1 guy saying he actually played it for more than a minute and just didn't find it fun. Both are amazing, but DS has this dark charm to it, makes me just want to continue playing.
Aegrus
Question; I'm getting some sort of. . .banding. . . in my atmospherics. Lights in dark places and the sky will get lighter/darker in increments instead of smoothly, leading to blotchy colors. Does anyone know what's causing this? Iv000
If something like that happens and I fix it I'll let you know. Currently it's perfect.
