JimmyRJump
Playing FO4 with vanilla assets only, I get the same result as Bear. My belief is that it all started when the Creation Club was introduced. The game always ran beautifully before that (and never, since). Like he said, I can clean everything and the game runs fine all day, or until I turn if off. Next time I load it, it no longer works. Do you think God mode can cause that problem? I always play in God mode as I'm too old and slow to not do that, but that's all I change from vanilla. I've been playing Fallout 4 since just after release, so I like to think I know all the tricks to keep it working.Creation Club has nothing to do with random CTD's. That's always been a feature of Bethesda games. It's more than likely that a mod or mods have been added and then removed during a play through, which has caused the save game to become corrupted. God mode can give you a problem if you collect everything you find because you go way past your carrying capacity and that can cause problems if you have hundreds of objects and are way past your carry limit as that will give the engine some issues that will give you a CTD. If you want to collect everything you find, make use of mods like Salvage Beacons which will enable you to gather everything you find, then store it in a container in the world and have it transferred to a settlement on your behalf. Hope this helps. Getting over carrying capacity is never an issue and doesn't corrupt a save nor does it prevent a save from loading. It's something that you can do without god mode enabled. All it does is keep you from running. If you want to carry more than can normally be carried, open the console and use the player.modav carryweight xxxxx, where the xxxxx stands for whatever amount you'd like to be the carrying limit. Don't use player.setav. The latter is only temporary and will have to be set everytime you closed the game, while modav is permanent. Adding or removing mods can be an issue, but most of the time isn't. I've had games where I removed a dozen of mods with plugins without a single glitch afterwards. Some mods do make the game crash when removing them, but there's few of those... @MarkusTay: MM2 is not the issue. The issue is an update to the game, as you pointed out and as F4SE pointed out. Playing off-line is the answer. When using F4SE, you don't need to launch through steam anyway, so... Also, always make a back-up of your Fallout4.exe so you can replace the updated one with the old one. That way, the game will keep working after an unforseen update. There's older exes to be found on steam to rollback to, also.
MarkusTay
I guess I'll have to go and find an old .exe then. Really pisses me off - i was having non-related problems (I've developed the very old and weird Codsworth glitch where he decides to not kill the bugs), which snowballed into the first MM quest (apparently they used to be one quest with a conjoined set of stages, and sometimes you can get the MM one to work by setting the 'Out of time' one way ahead of its normal finish-point). I was starting a new play-through JUST TO TEST SOMETHING having to do with a new mod I installed and I wanted to see what would happen with a new game, as opposed to some of the oddness I was getting with my current play-through (thus, all these headaches just to test something - I wasn't even planning on finishing that new game). Anyhow, I needed a 'clean' game, so I pulled all the esp/esl files out of the DATA folder (because I had a feeling it was the CC content causing the problems - at least that's what 2-year old posts were telling me) that were from the CC, and then ran the game just using the FO launcher (no MM2), just so I could get past the glitched part until the main NPCs made their way back to Sanctuary. The idea was to then put everything back (which I did) and re-launch using MM2. I've done similar before and it always worked fine. That's when I got the message that F4SE wasn't working anymore. I hadn't even considered sneaky Steam would slip an update in on me whilst I was testing stuff, dammit. Oh, and YEAH... totally agree with you on the weight-limit thing. My current game I have my carry capacity hacked with Console commands to 5K, and I have NO problems (and YES, I have gone OVER that a couple of times LOL... I am a HOARDER). Back when I played on X-box, if I went over 1K I would start to have problems (unhacked - I had the perk that let me walk normal using AP), and if I went over 2K the game would become a crashfest and I couldn't go anywhere near East Boston or have a companion. Thus, that poster had a point... but only if your system can't handle the load of keeping track of that much junk moving around all at once. it has almost nothing to do with the game itself. Now that I have a great gamerig, the only problems I have is either Bethesda or self-induced. Unfortunately, today it was a combination of the two. They caught me with my pants down while I was troubleshooting a new mod. {shakes fist at sky} I'm going to have to learn how to play off-line, I guess. That would have been the perfect way to do what I was trying to do.
BearExperiment
Same as MarkusTay I have been in the middle of troubleshooting, but I'm relieved it sounds like its not me who broke script extender. I think I have gotten the game working for the most part, after re configuring my ini files in every conceivable way for over over 3 days. The incorrect ini configuration message on NMM seems to have gone away, and my game doesn't crash when I start a new game, but old saves seem corrupted and do still crash. A new issue has come up since, and I was trying to figure it out before this update put everything on hold, but did not have any success resolving it. In the workshop menu (settlement building mode) objects added by "sandbag fortification mod" are listed, but there is no icon in the workshop menu, and they seem to have no mesh ("guard post" tab under "defenses" has no icon either, but displays [M] in the top right corner where icon should be). The name of the objects appear, and I can place them, it consumes resources, but they are not visible, and don't cause collision. My plugins are sorted using LOOT. Is there a better manual sorting method to sort plugins for FO4 than using LOOT? MarkusTay
For anyone having similar problems, the web-fu was strong with me today. I finally managed to track down PRECISELY what I needed. If anyone else is having similar problems, follow the instructions of this page TO THE LETTER (Took me a few tries to get it all correct, but trust me, all the info is there - you just need to look around for the stuff the guy is talking about). https://www.reddit.com/r/Steam/comments/611h5e/guide_how_to_download_older_versions_of_a_game_on/ This is NOT something illegal, etc. - it is PART OF STEAM!!! You CAN download old executables; they just make you jump through hoops to find the damn thing. This worked like a charm and saved my game. I highly recommend it. And THANK YOU for your help and advice, JimmyRJump Cheers
MarkusTay
Same as MarkusTay I have been in the middle of troubleshooting, but I'm relieved it sounds like its not me who broke script extender. My plugins are sorted using LOOT. Is there a better manual sorting method to sort plugins for FO4 than using LOOT?I Always use LOOT, and have never had any problems as far as load-order goes, and I normally run around 300 mods. There were a few I had to manually install (directly to the DATA folder) for FO to recognize the textures, etc., but that was maybe 3 total? EDIT: I also lost a category - my 'Invisible furniture' tab was missing, after I had to restore my furniture tab, and although I got the Furniture tab back just fine, no matter what I do I can't get 'Invisible furniture' to show up anymore. The mats I have already placed still work, so I know the mod is still functioning - I just can't build new ones. I may download a very similar mod, OR if I am feeling brave, maybe try to mod the mod so the tab shows up under furn/misc instead, or maybe even resrc/misc (where the other mod puts its idle animation mats). That lost tab is what started this whole process two days ago (and I know what the culprit is - another mod, but I need that one to keep 3 others running, so I needed a work-around). EDIT2: And after all this, I just reopened the game and the 'Invisible Furniture' tab is back. Its in a different spot than before, but otherwise everything is the way it should be. Almost makes all of these problems worth it (because I lost that tab BEFORE the update, so it was unrelated AFAIK, so this was just a happy byproduct of me trying to get my game working again). Like Travas says on DC radio - "good news is hard to come by these days". :D
BearExperiment
Correctly manually installed sandbag fortifications, still invisible. Occasionally still get the message in NMM saying fallout ini files are incorrectly configured. This might be the sign that its time for me to retire from gaming. Modding for Skyrim and every game before it made sense, after enough research and effort, but this is just a chaotic nightmare with no end in sight. ONLY way to enjoy this game is to get at least a bachelors degree in computer sciences, since there is no way to pay an expert hundreds of dollars to get this product to function correctly. 4 days of more than 8 hours each day of troubleshooting, time to find a new hobby. SE update did not do anything, and I knew it wouldn't. I've tried everything under the sun several times. I am not lucky like you guys and my Fallout 4 copy just requires more file reconfiguration than all of yours do, and I don't know how to reprogram games from the ground up, so I am left out. Bethesda games with mods were the only reason I have ever played video games, and it seems like they want to make mods a thing of the past, so its time to sell the gaming rig and buy a snowboard or something so I have something to do over winter. Thanks Jannifer and others for trying to help, but this game is just made very poorly.

I've downloaded the new F4SE and my game crashes upon trying to load a save game, even with ALL mods disabled. I've tried loading various savegames in case of savegame corruption but the game still crashes upon loading saves. I can start the game without F4SE both in Steam and NMM. So something is going on that I don't understand.
