How to pinpoint problematic mods?

I'm trying to figure out what in my load order is causing me some problems. I've tried the old method of disabling half my mods, testing, then disabling the other 50%. However, disabling a large number usually just causes me to CTD almost immediately. I started a new save as a vampire and the game would usually CTD within a minute or two. I started another game with a character who was imprisoned by the Thalmor (Alternate Start Addon). I typically CTD on my way through clearing out Thalmor inside the fort, never making it outside. The last few times, I noticed I would CTD as soon as I looted a specific Thalmor of his robes. Is there a way to use a program like SSEdit to determine what (if any) mods are altering Thalmor Robes?

Something a lot of modders overlook is scripts.

You can CTD simply from the sheer number of scripts trying to run at once. When I learned about this I was trying to run lots of mods on top of Legacy of the Dragonborn, enhanced blood textures (which used scripting to keep track of wound duration) and Footprints (which uses scripting to keep track of walking NPCs in order to display the decal).

Now you have LotD in there which is a large mod and takes up a lot by itself. The author(s) even warn against using it with other, script heavy mods. I see you're also using Footprints - I recommend going into the MCM and changing the effected NPCs to a max of 5 - the default is 20 (!!!) if I remember right so it loads in/applies the effect the NPCs you usually aren't even seeing. I've found putting it at 5 let's me enjoy the effect of the mod (myself/party, immediate people nearby) without wasting PC power applying the effect elsewhere.

I see you're also running frostfall. I've not used the mod myself - but I think it uses scripting to keep track of your condition(s). You have a handful of other mods I personally don't have experience with. However my vote is going to the possibility that you have a scripting overload if traditional troubleshooting methods haven't yielded any results.

The most Reliable but also Time Consuming way, is to Load all of your Mods in SSEEdit and check for any record in Red. which means mod Conflicts. this is the best possbile way for Conflict resolution, but requires user input. and as said is time consuming, especially with a lot of mods, ovbiously the less mods you have the more quicker it will be to resolve conflicts.

with that said heres a bit of information to bare in mind:

i recommend using Wrye Bash when using the classic disable mods to figure the problem technique. the reason i recommend Wrye Bash is because disabling a mod with it will also disable its requirements, thus preventing the Immediate CTD you get when disabling large amount of mods without disabling their requirements (as in mods that require the mod you just disabled).

as Mentioned above, LOOT is very handy in Skyrim, as it will also tell you if mods require Patches, thus preventing further problems later on. (however from a perfect load order perspecitive, it is very unlikely to give you a perfect load order, as automated processes never are completely reliable, not too mention LOOT load order sorting completely relies on User Input, which whenever a new mod comes out, LOOT will not recongize it, until the master database is updated, thus the new mod will be placed wherever u installed it. but with that said, LOOT will still give you a very good base line for your load order, as it would very likely recongize a lot of mods, and thus place them accordingly)

Load Order and Scripts are very important for game stability, an incorrect load order will cause all sorts of problems, ranging from mods overriding other mods, to CTDs.

likewise running too many heavily scripted mods will also cause all sorts of issues, again CTDs being the most likely cause.

Skyrim is very happy to crash when it comes across a problem, our job as modders is to prevent that.

Also i Strongly Recommend Creating a Bash Patch, again using Wrye Bash, this will Merge all leveled lists edits together thus greatly increasing mod compatibility.

Other Potential Causes for CTDs are:

Corrupted Nif Files/ Unsupported Mesh Files (Usually caused by badly ported mods that include Mesh files, or Simply Mods not even ported but copy and pasted from Oldrim into Skyrim SE) - (Oldrim Mesh files must be optimized for Skyrim Special Edition)

Deleted Navmeshes

Missing Master Files (as in A Mod requires a file that you do not have, this will result in an immediate CTD upon Launching the Game)

and Badly Scripted Mods, which can result in Script Overflow, causing CTDs - these would be mods that constantly fire, even when not necessary, or simply scripts not made properly, this will cause other scripts that are all firing at the same time to overflow the papyrus scripting system, causing Crashes, Freezes etc etc (Its Unlikely you will come across badly scripted mods however, but its still a possibility)

and last but not least, Insufficient Resources/Hardware - this would be, using many mods that use a lot of system resources, causing your hardware's Available resources to run out, thus resulting in CTDs, or in more Severe And Rare Cases, System Crashes

so basically, the Game crashing, is not always down to mods, it can in quite a few cases be caused by Insufficiant hardware/Resources, especially if you happen to be using Windows 10, which in itself already uses a lot of Hardware Resources, leaving less for games.
