Problem starting Vortex from Browser /starting Vortex general

Right at the front I'm going to say that this is more than likely Microsoft's fault. Those jokers managed to whack my PC most mightily in an update a bit over a year ago.

So... on to the Vortex issues

Vortex ver: 0.16.15

Modding: Skyrim SE

Mods installed: none. I just had a problem with mods and the game so I thought I'd wipe out all mods and start over with Vortex

My PC is a self-built with an Intel Core i7, 32GB RAM and geForce GTX 980 Ti with a whacked version of Windows 10 64bit.

So far, every time I've attempted to download a mod, I press Download With Mod Manager on Nexus and the UAC pops up wanting to know if I want NMM to handle the download the file. I followed the instructions I found in other posts here to make sure that Vortex was set to handle downloads, but the symptom persisted.

I opened the file extension settings app in Windows and found that .nxm files were still set to NMM. With the wonderful whacking of Windows, there's no way for me to set this to a different program. At least through that means. I went into regedit, found the nxm file type and put the path to Vortex in. Rebooted the computer. Still nothing.

The closest that Microsoft came to doing anything about the pool of crap I'm sitting in was to allow me to do a non-destructive reinstall of Windows and then set up a new user. I haven't started using that because getting everything set up is a major pain in the wazoo. I moved over to that user and decided I'd try to set up the mods there. Here's where my other problem pops up. Although Download With Mod Manager correctly starts Vortex, I can watch in Task Manager as that single instance of Vortex blossoms out into three instances, pop up then comes the message that Vortex is already running. Answering that dialog allows all three instances to close. I have a suspicion that since I haven't "installed" the Steam client on that user, this may be causing difficulties.

Any sage words of wisdom? (I'm hoping they aren't "go away and don't ever post here again") I don't think my wife is going to buy off on getting a new computer for the games while I rebuild this one from scratch.

Yup. That's exactly what my options look like (well... with the exception of the paths). And Windows even acknowledges that Vortex is the default handler for .nxm files. But The Evil Browser still spins up NMM when I try to download a mod.

OK, which Browser are you using, because you can also set the filetype the browser handles within the browser as well

I'm switching betwixt Chrome and Opera. The latest I have: I went back into regedit and found Yet Another place to replace NexusClient. Now I'm getting Vortex to start, but it never executes the download. Curious. The command line in regedit is Vortex.exe %1. Does it need any additional parameters? I'm really close, so I think I should be able to bend this to my will. (Megalomania showing yet?)

Thanks for the help so far.

At this point I'm going to guess that the reason the option to associate NXM files with Vortex isn't working is because of all the Registry Editing you've done.

Also, do you STILL have NMM installed?

If so, start it up as an ADMIN and check to see if the "Associate with NXM" box is unchecked, I did run into a problem last year where NMM refused to relignquish control of NXM links until I shut it off in NMM, quit NMM, started NMM, shut it off AGAIN, and quit NMM

Ever closer, but still not quite. I have NMM dissociated, but now I get a Winders popup telling me that it needs a new handler for nxm files. I've tried setting it via Winders Explorer using "Open With" but the value doesn't stick. On my alternate (non-screwed up) user, it tries to open Vortex but I'm back to the "Vortex already open" issue.

I'm beginning to think I'm not going to be able to get this working on either user.

I noticed that Vortex has a download URL option. This kinda halfway worked when I was fooling around with it. Is there any way to get the download URL from the web site?

OK, now that you've gotten NMM disassociated, now open Vortex, make sure to turn on that "Handle" toggle switch, and click on the FIX NOW (You said you're using Chrome and Opera)

Then close Vortex.

Open Vortex, then go to the same place in the screenshot, Turn it OFF.

Close Vortex

Open Vortex, then go to the same place in the screenshot, turn the switch ON (Close Vortex, then open it for good measure.

(I know, it sounds like superstitious behavior at this point, but I had to do a similar dance once with NMM and Vortex when swapping NXM)

Now see if that helped

Now it's just Windows being an unspeakable piece of trash. Windows pops up a message telling me I need a new app to handle nxm files. No capability of selecting an app. I already have Vortex set as the default handler for .nxm files in Windows settings. It's just one more thing that they're doing to annoy me. Idiots.

Thanks for all the help. I think at this point, I'll concentrate on following threads that pertain to the multiple instances of Vortex opening and switch over to the other user once I have that solved.

Sheesh. Where else could you find a hobby that's both rewarding and frustrating?

Wow, that is totally weird

Now, are you trying to set the file type in Windows using that second account?

Because that's probably the reason you can't change it.

Can you log into the Admin account and change the file type as an Admin?
