JimboUK
There is already a mirrors tab that allows for that. Also Dropbox is awesome.
RazaCovek
I'm surprised that this topic hasn't been locked and ratbloke not banned for discussing file sharing. Has there been a change of policy concerning any kind of file sharing?
JimboUK
Try reading through it, no one is suggesting anything illegal.
Dark0ne
If we did look in to this it would be on an opt-in basis, so mod authors could choose whether their files are seeded as torrents or not.
Nephenee13
Try reading through it, no one is suggesting anything illegal. The problem is that people have no idea how torrents work. If we did look in to this it would be on an opt-in basis' date=' so mod authors could choose whether their files are seeded as torrents or not.[/quote'] That would be reasonable, and perhaps limiting it to files over a certain size (100 MB?) since small files gain little from torrenting. Yeah people tend to associate it with thievery which is unfortunate because it's a great way to cut costs.
DrakeTheDragon
One thing I'm wondering now. Who's gonna be the seeders in this equation? The Nexus file servers? In which way would that help improving the current situation with file server connectivity or bandwidth issues? If it's the Nexus users, which is what such torrent networks usually live from, a couple thousand clients having downloaded the file in question already and now providing it for others to download while they're online, how many Nexus users would suddenly be getting torrent clients when they never needed any before to begin with? How could the Nexus increase that number? Where could this system get its seeders from at the end of the day? And in a number which would help improving the situation? Just wondering.
Dark0ne
Short term, we'd buy a server solely for seeding torrents and then we'd see how great the community spirit really is here, by seeing how many people would seed their downloads. Long term, we could tie the torrents to NMM and introduce a torrent client/P2P downloader through it. We could even incentivise it later on by providing rewards for people who seed and upload 1GB, 5GB, 10GB and so on of mods through the torrents. Those are just ideas. JimboUK
The Nexus would have to seed, the savings come from not having to deliver the whole file to everyone who downloads it, bandwidth would come from other users as well as the Nexus. Those who want to contribute to the site can just leave theirs seeding, it's not any different to how X-Fire distributes files with the aid of users bandwidth, the BBC also do a similar thing with their iPlayer. DrakeTheDragon
Now that makes sense. I figured as much as introducing a kind of Nexus Torrent Client. Was just wondering how many mod users would actually be willing to become seeders. Some incentives like mentioned could help though. Consider my curiosity sated. Thanks.
