0034: Of Lucky Eddie and the Whirla of Fate #34

Lucky Eddie spent time in the mental realm, that seemed so very real, with the silvery woman and there he trained in varied ways, researched knowledge he had gained, went over what had happened since he had become a fategame-player and generally tried to improve his understanding of his situation.

LE Something does not add up about everything that has happened. It began, I think, when I awoke in the morning on a typical Academy day to find that a small box parcel had been delivered to me. I can see the scene unfolding in my mind. Yes, I missed something of vital importance before though it was in front of me. The package had none of the normal cheap postal barcodes stuck to its outer packaging, had no address except my name, had only a black square with a golden wheel inside it like that of on my fategame-rings. I wonder why I did not notice that before. When I awoke the parcel was sitting in my in-tray at the door as if somebody had delivered it through the door chute. The door chutes are hardly used these days, what with the new tube delivery network-system being completed.

After more time with Silvia, having some pleasure as well as training, he returned to realscape and his new house in the Imperial City.

With the book about the Imperial City was a faded map of the city, its various sections of the core, the inner ring, the middle ring, the outer ring and various satellite areas. Those last were the Arcane University, the Imperial Officers Academy, the Imperial City Arena and the Imperial City Prison along with some others. The Harborside, where he was, was special in the way it was set out. Riverships traveled up and down the Imperial Cyrodilic River and ocean going ships came from from the ocean to the far south, or went that way.

He had played in the gameworld version of the Imperial City, the super virtual reality one, but there were noticeable differences between that and this one; there were also many similarities but nothing was identical.

Lucky Eddie held the WhirlaKey in his right hand and it had no influence over him, good or bad, because he was a fategame-player and because he was wise enough not to do anything stupid with it. The globe blinked and in its interior appeared a holographic type of image of the White Gold Tower. More images came and went, some showing maps, pictures of buildings, pictures of individuals, secret doors and much else.

LE A picture of Emperor Uriel Septum VII, a picture of the Amulet of Kings. I need to obtain the Amulet of Kings not just to deliver to Jauffre in Weynon Priory, not just to follow the expected game quest, but to use to help me find the Whirl of Fate.

=- You will play the quests of the gameworld?

LE As much as possible. This is really not a gameworld. It will be interesting to meet the Emperor as a far more realistic entity. Also other characters of the gameworld quests like Baurus and Jauffre.

The image of the metallic stone cube staid for but a moment. At first he thought it might be a small artifact, like the WhirlKey itself, but then it was shown next to the White Gold Tower and it was taller, much taller. It was metallic stone, a flowing pattern of silver, gold and copper tones. What was it? Why was it shown there, next to the White Gold Tower, for comparison of size? Was the great cube the Whirla of Fate? If it was the Whirla of Fate, what could he do with such a massive artifact? How could he begin to make it vanish, to make it safe?

0035: Of Lucky Eddie, and the Whirla of Fate #35

Lucky Eddie used some magical spell-powers for the first time, practicing by summoning up a basic flesh-elemental worker who did some dusting before it vanished. That cost him magicka, magical energies of that realm, but his magicka regenerated at a quite fast rate and he had a quite high level of it available to him when it was fully regenerated.

When the intruders came sneaking into his basement chamber, through a clever unlocking of the exterior door to the basement, a magical ward-emblem he had placed close to there, sent them to sleep. He materialized blankets, food rations, lamps, lamp oil, and other items for the children. Then he lay them each on a blanket and covered each with another blanket. Each was grubby, wore some used but well cared for clothing and had a backsack of stuff.

When they awoke, slowly and groggily thanks to after effects of the ward-emblem, which he had recharged with his intrinsic magicka, he gave the five children each a bowl of food, some breadbiscuits and a hot mug of cofii along with some water. The younger children, a girl and two boys, did not like the cofii so he gave them some warmed cordial water instead, which they enjoyed.

One oldest girl, an older boy, two younger boys and a younger girl. Some were older than himself but he was not about to admit as such to them. He wondered what he was going to do with the, apart from try to make sure that they were okay. He sat looking at them, he sipping warm cofii, and they sat looking at him.

The oldest girl, who seemed to be about fifteen years old, spoke out. “Why are you being so nice to us? You are not up to something bad, are you?”

“No!” Lucky Eddie sighed. “Is there nobody to look after you in the Imperial City? Children should be well cared for.”

The oldest girl frowned. “Can you not see that each of us is marked?”

He looked carefully at each child in turn. Apart from a strange circular birth mark on the forehead of each, a 'sense' of strong intrinsic power, he saw nothing of concern. So he shook his head. “All is fine, as far as I am concerned. You are magefolk but magefolk are fine. You have special magic in you are gifted by the Divines so very long ago. Your linked memories will being you knowledge of such things. You need assistance to learn properly how to use your abilities. The 'mark' is one to celebrate. Of course I can easily show you how you can hide the mark.”

The oldest girl looked so surprised it was almost comical. “You can?”

Lucky Eddie was puzzled. “I wonder that your parents have not done so.”

The girl shook her head in wonder. “Don't you know what is happening here in the Imperial City? We were not always this way. We became sick with a strange sickness and we died a short time but then we came back to life and we were marked this way. You say that we are magefolk now.”

“You did not die but were only briefly in a death like state of transformation.” Lucky Eddie frowned. “Something does not add up with your story, not at all. Strange sickness should not course your transformations. No, somebody, something, saved you from death by transforming you. Now that does make sense as far as it goes. Tell me about the strange sickness. You are free to stay here as long as you want. Is there anybody I can contact that can help you further?”

0036: Of Lucky Eddie and the Whirla of Fate #36

“Your life energies were being drained by a vampire, along with some of your blood. Vampires do not ever just take blood but also drain the very life from their victims as they drink blood.” Lucky Eddie had found tiny, faded, puncture marks on each throat of each child. “Why are you on the run?”

“Templedom Holy Investigators came to our family homes. They were led by a tall, cold eyed priestess who demanded that we be turned over to be examined by the Templedom.” The oldest girl, sixteen year old Daphina, showed her anger and fear. “The Sisterhood of Compassion tried to intercede but then the Templedomers offered gold coins to our families. Our families are poor, have more children than they can feed, and none are Imperials. All Templedom scum are Imperials but not all Imperials are scum for some have tried to help us.”

In his mind he visualized the 'Templedom' that seemed larger and more important, more powerful, in this version of the Imperial City than in any other he knew of. It was so important that it was placed at the very core of the Imperial City, relatively very close to the White Gold Tower itself. There was the White Gold Tower as surrounded by the Imperial Palace, the Imperial Government House and other impressive buildings to do with the Emperor, Imperial Court and the Imperial Government. The Emperor's Imperial Bodyguards, the Blades, had a small fortress attached to the Imperial Palace. Right across from the Imperial Palace was the Templedom of the Divines.

“Templedom of the Divines?” He nodded. “I have heard of it.”

“No, it is now called the Templedom of the Great Divine.” Daphina corrected him. “There has been a split between the Orders of the Nine (Divines) and the Templedom. Many Imperials now go to the Templedom to worship and ignore the Grand Chapel of the Nine and the Temple of the One of Akatosh himself. It is said that the Templedomers are against the mageborn, the magefolk, but secretly that they are also against the Dragonborn.”

Yet again, the 'Great Divine' and Lucky Eddie had a dark feeling, that had been growing ever since he had first heard the name spoken, that there was something quite troubling linked with it. This 'Great Divine' had nothing to do with the Divines despite certain claims that he had heard from its followers. The group of people, from the Empire, had spoken of themselves as being followers of the Great Divine and after a while he had begun 'sensing' something odd about them, even Matrina and Cathidra who he liked quite a lot.

So it was that he taught the children about the basics of being magefolk, mageborn, and how to access ancient mageborn memories as shared across generations, even gaps in generations. So they quickly gained use of intrinsic special abilities and hid their 'mageborn marks' by making them fade away. They reached out, with care, to make mind-to-mind contact with other magefolk. There were magefolk imprisoned in the Templedom but others hidden safely in the Arcane University, with the Sisterhood of Compassion and in other places. There were also magefolk hidden, less safely, in other places. Most had been born as magefolk and knew of ways of concealment but it seemed that those hunting them had exotic devices to assist them to find magefolk.

When he was done, he wondered if he had done the right thing but it had seemed to be the right thing.

=- You have gained 2,000fgc plus 2,000fgc as bonus. You have gained three fategame-points along with another two fategame-points. You have gained two replicants, four hulknoids, one unicorn, six dragon points and five deathfayne points. Consider your spinling! I can say no more on that!

'Sensing' that it was important to use the spinling, he activated it.
