Why is your game crashing?

I have not read any of your previous posts so I don't know what you have done to resolve crashing.

I am assuming you have done the basics already for your computer, check for viruses and spyware and get rid of them and also check for boot sector infecting root kits with something like kapersky TDSS killer. Spybot search and destroy and nod32 or kapersky are great for removing anything and everything bad.

After that it can be narrowed down to OS and hardware, corrupted windows, windows files damaged by viruses and spyware and have to be replaced etc. Don't ever get the omalarik trojan virus! That mess will attach to exe and dll files and then self encrypt with five different encryption methods that can't be cracked by any antivirus to date so the file can never be cleaned it has to be deleted! That virus might as well be like cancer or aids for a computer because you can't clean it only delete it. Better to backup and reload anyway after getting rid of virus and spyware for peace of mind.

If you have a desktop, try not to overclock for a while and get the latest drivers for everything except the video card. Using nvidia cards is a pain lately because of all the adobe flash crash to desktop issues in win7. Using amd cards their drivers are always bugged slightly and at some point you get the BSOD crash and the computer can't start windows anymore. Actually I haven't seen that one in a while I hope it never comes back it has kept me away from amd/ati for almost ten years now. I want to jump ship to amd just to get away from the adobe ctd crap because it happens in photoshop too but I just can't see an end to the driver screwups from amd they are always there in just about every game some kind of fix or patch has to be made/found like progress bars not working in skyrim etc. So if you have nvidia it seems some of their older drivers work better than new one and for amd it comes down to patches.

If you are using an ssd drive make sure you have the latest firmware in it. Also if you have an ocz or adata ssd drive then you will have problems. Better brands are intel, crucial and samsung.

After that is all squared away then it comes down to memory and mobo brands and settings and power supply brand and wattage. I don't care what anyone says, running SLI or crossfire with only a 600watt psu is not gonna work right if the video cards eat 100watts each or more. Then try overclocking too lol that is just not gonna work. I run an 850watt psu myself from brands like zalman and cougar and corsair etc. the good brands only. Those cheap brands that you probably never heard of but the shelves are full of them at the store are hardware killers don't use them. First time you get a power surge or a brown out or black out in your area those things take your hardware with them.

Ultimately the best thing to do is keep narrowing your situation down until you have the bare minimum running because that is when the problem child is revealed and you can stomp it to death on the floor and then replace it lol. Bad memory and questionable motherboards are somewhat common problems these days. I have seen more complaints for mobo brands like msi, evga, and the small guys like biostar and shuttle than other companies like gigabyte and asus or intel but recently asus is starting to bug people a lot with flaky or bad memory slots and bad usb connectors... that kind of stuff only happend with msi and biostar back in the day. There is no reason to buy cheap brand memory because the market is still flooded with memory and the prices are all about the same for almost any brand.

What I have...

Gigabyte mobo X58A-OC

intel core i7 960 overclocked to 4ghz

12gb triple channel ram supertalent brand @1600mhz

Creative labs X-FI sound card with the 64mb memory onboard and the lame letter F on the top

Crucial m4 128gb SSD drive for OS

samsung SSD PM800 256gb drive for apps and games

Win764bit OS

Cougar SX S850 power supply 850watts

Scythe ninja big square cooler with one fan on top

Silverstone Raven 2 case with sideways hard drive arrangement

Fancy fan controller and aftermarket fan in the top exhaust position

So I am overclocking on air and it works great but I have to clean the dust filters every few days or my pc will crash in the summer, winter not so much. Had this rig for a year now and it works great but since I am running my memory at 1600mhz it causes my system to crash eventually because the X58 chipset on my mobo doesn't like large size ram sticks 4gb or greater running at 1600mhz even if they are designed to run at that speed. So I will have to lower my speed soon unless I want to keep crashing but I want to maintain my 4ghz overclock so it is a tossup at this point. If you are not overclocking you should not be having any crashes on good hardware with firmware fixed SSD drives or retail regular drives. Even old sata drives don't cause crashing unless they are really crappy brand with known firmware bug like seagate with their firmware issues many years ago. Only current model regular drives that come to mind for avoiding are western digital green power drives, they go bad so much ugh. Even if they are not the main drive they can stall the computer with their snorlax programming!

If you get down to just one drive, one stick of memory, one video card, sound but no internet and no fancy usb3 drivers, no card readers or extra stuff no firewire addons, no extra cards pci or pci-e, just win7 or whatever your running with and latest drivers except for known good video drivers and patches if needed and nothing on the computer but your OS and all the latest windows updates and skyrim latest version don't use HD packs or dawnguard. If you crash after that then something very basic is wrong with your computer. Either video card, memory or motherboard or cpu. As long as you have a good brand psu and it is recent and no bad storms in the area in the last few months then it can be narrowed down and found.

Again I have not read any of your past posts so I don't know your situation but if the above should help to isolate the problem. It also helps to have a local friend or computer store that is willing to test with different video card, ram, hard drive etc.

ulfricuk, hi, just some suggestions,

if you bought a hardcopy of skyrim on disk then you should be able to install v1.1 and block steam from updating.

i think there were some reports of patch v1.7 causing crashes on certain hardware/driver configurations.

you may want to try an update/reinstall of your graphics drivers and reconfigure game profile settings (back down eye candy effects settings).

make sure your hardware is getting enough cooling, monitor your gaming rig temps.

cleanly uninstall all mods (remove any/all mod files you installed), turn off autosave (save manually),

restore the INI files back to the default versions, backup/delete all your existing gamesaves.

carefully review any non-essential windows services that may not be needed and disable.

start a new game, play/test for stability, and do not install or tweak anything.

stick to the quests and do not randomly clear any discovered locations.

mods should be installed one at a time, tested, and always be prepared to back out any changes and revert to

previous gamesaves, stay away from mods that intrusively overhaul skyrim game systems.

keep a backup of your skyrim game folders, block steam updates, play offline.

You don't want 1.1, anyway. That version was garbage. 1.3 is really the best version, so far. The thing is, you have to keep up with updates and make backups of the key files (the ones that get changed between updates) to be able to roll back your version. It just shows you how lame and unsophisticated Steam is that they don't permit you to choose and/or lock down a particular version.

Many of us play without crashes, so v1.7 works fine.

I know, right? I've never seen China, so it obviously doesn't exist. And the moon landing? Total fake.

If most of us don't have any problems, then the game isn't broken.

Why?

Because we all got the same game.

Stop blaming the game for problems that are your own fault.
