How to redeploy mod profile from scratch for Steam games?

I ported my Skyrim SE mods from NMM, but disabling them in Vortex does not remove them. How do I deleted all of the mods in my Steam Skyrim SE folder and redeploy them from my Vortex profile? Uninstalling and reinstalling the game did not work. Moreover, how do I permanently remove a mod from my Vortex mods list?

So the problem here is that when you did the port over from NMM, you didn't bother to uninstall the mods through NMM. As such, all of the mod files that have been installed by NMM are still there. When Vortex does the deploy, it takes the mod files that have the same name, and renames it to have a .backup extension, before creating the hardlinks.

Simply uninstalling and reinstalling doesn't work because the uninstall process doesn't touch the non-game files, as such, all of the files created by NMM are still there, along with the hardlinks by Vortex.

As for removing a mod from Vortex, when you go to remove a mod, it should open up a window. On the same "line" as the remove button, there should be two checkboxes. One for the mods (which gets rid of the folder in the mod staging folder), and one for the archive (which gets rid of the zip/rar/7z file in the downloads). Make sure both are checked before clicking Remove.

So, what are your options to get rid of the files?

  • Uninstall the game, delete the entirety of the folder in SteamApps/common/SkyrimSpecialEdition (or something like that), and than reinstall. Hit "Deploy" on Vortex.
  • Hit the "Purge" button in Vortex (it's in the "Mods" section of Vortex. If not on the "test branch" of Vortex, you may need to "Enable Advance Mode" in the Settings to see and use it). Go through the game folder and delete all files and folders you think don't belong there. Verify game integrity through Steam to re-download default game files. Hit "Deploy" on Vortex.

I ended up completely removing Skyrim Special Edition from my computer. now Vortex thinks it's still managing Skyrim Special Edition, when in reality, the folder it is managing was removed and it needs to rescan for the game. how do I do this?

okay, with some help from the forums, some help from google, and some help from youtube, my problem is finally resolved. having a mod manager was a life saver, since my save file would not have survived without it. thanks all!
