Had to reinstall Vortex, and now it's behaving strangely. (duplicated mods/originals disabled)

The last time I used Vortex was a good few months ago. Today I decided I wanted to play Fallout: New Vegas again, and thought it would be fun to find a new mod or two. So I found a companion mod on Nexus and installed it. When it finished installing, Vortex froze and stopped responding. I closed out of it and restarted Vortex. It never got past the splash screen. I heard a Windows error noise (or whatever the sound is that plays when something goes wrong) and saw that Vortex had stopped responding. No dialogue box or anything, just frozen. Closed out and restarted, did the same thing. I repeated this a number of times to no avail, so I decided to uninstall and reinstall Vortex.

Since I couldn't get into Vortex to uninstall it, I used the Programs & Features uninstaller, then downloaded the latest version of the Beta from Nexus. Vortex started up just fine, the mod I had installed only needed enabling, and off I went to play New Vegas. Later, I decided I felt like playing Skyrim SE. This is where we arrive at my current problem.

I switched modes from New Vegas to Skyrim SE in Vortex, only to find that every one of my mods had been duplicated. The original versions say "uninstalled", and the duplicates are disabled. What's stranger is that although it says all the mods are either disabled or uninstalled, under Plugins, everything is there, enabled, and just like normal. I started up Skyrim to see how the game itself reacted, and it played just fine, no problems with any mods, other than SKSE saying something about needing an update. Exited out of Skyrim and went to the Nexus forums to see if anyone else had a similar problem. Turns out this is a somewhat common issue, and many times you apparently just need to re-deploy the mods...well, when I did that, nothing happened, except that under Plugins, all the mods are now gone. Not even disabled or anything, just disappeared. Under Mods, it's still the same, duplicates "disabled" and originals "uninstalled".

It looks like I'm forced to re-enable/re-install each mod if I want to play Skyrim again, although I have no idea what to do about the duplicates, nor do I know whether or not to enable/install the duplicated mods or the original mods.

EDIT: Checked my other games. No Man's Sky is perfectly fine, but Oblivion is also messed up. According to the Mods tab I have *no* mods, but under Plugins, all the mods are there. They were disabled though.

  • 2 weeks later...

Ten...days...later...anybody out there...anybody who gives a damn, please? Nothing I've tried yet has fixed it.

Unfortunately, it sounds like once you had to shut down Vortex when it froze, and uninstalled it with Fallout New Vegas active, when you reinstalled it, it was able to deal with Fallout New Vegas because it was the last active Game, but switching to Skyrim messes up Vortex because it wasn't active when you had to shut down and reinstall.

Try a PURGE and Re-Deploy with Skyrim, your Deployment.json probably got messed up.

It's worth a try.

To enable PURGE, go to SETTINGS---->INTERFACE----------->Enable Advanced Mode
